Very interesting! I didn’t realize the quills were wrapped so tightly around something. I think that would make them even more fragile than those on my quill boxes.
Great story about your necklace- so meaningful coming from your Dad.
I am fairly certain both necklaces are loom beaded - as opposed to stitched.
Loom beading is common amongst tribes o f what they refer to as the Western Great Lakes tribes, and requires a lot of talent. In a sense it’s like a loom for a weaving but requires beads be added to the warp and weft no easy feat!!
Thanks again for sharing!
Thank you! I know quite a bit about Southwestern Native American art, but not a lot about any other, so I appreciate the information; very interesting, I’ll have to look it up now. My family had quite a bit of Canadian Native art, but I was pretty little when we bought most of it, and of course when you’re young you never think to ask questions. I’m sure my Dad could have told me more. We had a full headdress that was hanging above a fireplace, but after mom died none of us were really comfortable keeping it, so we gave it away. My family had a furniture business, and my dad would collect antiques for display (both for the business and in our home), so we had a lot of stuff to deal with.
