Can someone diagnose this?

Hello all,

Just curious what made these blotches on the silver. I haven’t worn this for a couple months. It wasn’t like this when I was wearing it.

Cause? Oxidation of some sort? Remedy?

Thanks for taking the time to look at this.

where was the cross kept while it was not being worn?

It appears a chemical has leached out the surface copper in the sterling leaving behind areas of pure silver. Chlorine reacts leaving behind a layer of white silver chloride. Just one possibility if the pendant is sterling with only copper making up the composition. Acids can deplete surface copper leaving behind areas of pure silver. There may also be another metal in the mix that is reacting with…?

Perfumes, soaps, cleaners, lotions, etc. may affect sterling depending on the ingredients.

The green verdigris suggests there is also another chemical reaction going on.

It was in my night stand. I double checked my nightstand and the only thing out of place would be a pile of foreign coin but nothing else.
