Curious about this squash blossom

I’ve refrained from commenting on this squash so far with the “if you don’t have anything nice to say then don’t say anything at all” mentality, but since you seem to be wavering a little and want feedback I’ll give you my honest opinion. This squash just doesn’t do it for me. It kind of gives me a bit of a 1970’s, anyone-can-try-their-hand-at-silversmithing vibe, whether Native made or not. The construction of it is odd to me with the sheet silver with unfinished edges on the naja and the squash beads. The coral appears to be real Mediterranean branch coral, I’m guessing not dyed, but of lower quality with those lighter spots (but don’t quote me on this as I don’t know terribly much about coral). The way the coral is “strapped” to the silver plate instead of bezel set seems a little lazy, is not aesthetically pleasing to me, and probably doesn’t protect the coral very well. As others have pointed out the large amount of space between the two rows of beads looks odd and there is possibly the potential for the naja to hang wrong. I think that for even the number Jason quoted you could do a lot better and I certainly wouldn’t pay any more than that. Hope that doesn’t seem too harsh.

Speaking of Mediterranean branch coral, this beautiful 1940s necklace just popped up on a dealer’s website. Note the coral’s deep red color, but there are some light spots coming through.

@OrbitOrange I value everyone’s opinions here and I’m so glad you spoke up. I’m a rather direct person and not a bit offended, so I appreciate your input on it as well. I think my head is with you and chicfarmer on this one, I just needed to get my heart over the coral!

Thank you @TAH for the reference. Last night I started to investigate what was out there for branch coral. There seems to be some coral on the market from Italy that looks a lot like the necklace you posted (deeper red, no reversed bubbles, elongated striations). Another facet to consider for sure!

I never really buy on line, because I am someone who is never sure about a piece until I can hold it and try it on. But I try to tell myself if I don’t really love it, I should hold off. That seems to work for me (although I’m not ever buying to resell, just to wear).

THE VERDICT: I passed on it.
After one final look and try on, I didn’t like the vibe/energy it gave…it felt very somber. With all of the great advise from the Turquoise People, I can honestly say I feel confident in my decision! I can’t thank you all enough for your input, feedback, expertise and experience. And to @Jason for providing such an open and educational format for learning! You guys are the best!!!

I think you made a wise choice. For that much money you can find a great traditional squash blossom necklace.

If there were this many questions and doubts, I would have also passed on it. I think you did right.

I’ll have to post my “franken-necklace” sometime as a cautionary tale! Bought very early on in my turquoise experience, I am lucky that the seller refunded almost all of my money (I opted to keep it just to avoid dealing with mailing it back).

This piece was far more expensive…for this price range, you’d better be sure.
