Endless bead necklace

Hello, I just joined today and I’m wondering if you guys could please tell me anything about this necklace? I think it’s turquoise but I’m no expert so I don’t know. It’s cold to the touch, and is 34 inches long.

Hi and welcome. I don’t believe this is Native made, and I’m not sure it’s actual turquoise; hard to tell from the pics.

Where did you get it, and what were you told about it? Where did the description “endless bead necklace” come from?

It’s a Chinese import of dyed howlite, inexpensive costume jewelry.

What indicates howlite? Endless is what a necklace with no clasp is called.

Where did this come from, how was it represented to you? Did you pay near nothing?

Everything about it adds up to imported non-turquoise material. Howlite or magnesite. If you have reasons to think otherwise, by all means share.

It was my grandmother’s. What about it adds up to other things?

Everything we’ve already mentioned. The fact that it doesn’t look like real turquoise, and the design looks Asian made. It is also almost exactly like the one in the link which is a Chinese import. Doesn’t mean your grandmother didn’t buy it, we’re just telling you it’s not Native American.

Howlite is a stone that is often dyed and used to look like turquoise, especially in Asian made jewelry. The matrix that we can see in the beads looks like Howlite.

Interesting. It doesn’t scratch easily, isn’t howlite kind of soft and easily scratched?

I think there’s a bit of cognitive dissonance happening here. You asked for help identifying your pieces then, when you get said help, you deny the results. Why ask if you didn’t want opinions that don’t suit your desires?

It’s not a matter of suiting desires but if it doesn’t scratch easily and howlite does that doesn’t make sense to me, does it to you? Composite would make more sense.

It absolutely could be composite. The thing you need to keep in mind is that we can only SEE it, and not FEEL it. All we can do is give you an eyeball opinion and, the consensus is that is not genuine. What it’s actually made of is not easy to discern via the computer screen.

I get that, that’s exactly why I added the fact that I couldn’t scratch it.

it depends on how hard the thing is doing the scratching. it has to be harder than the thing you are using it on, or obvs it won’t scratch it. regardless of what the material IS (and whether it is scratchable), it’s NOT turquoise. Knotted bead strands can be made by anyone that can tie a knot, but these are commonly chinese in origin. My vote is glass or dyed quartz. Wear them in good health.

This is kind of cool. I have never seen one of these. I can see giving one bead on strand a scratch. But I am not sure if I would scratch a small ring or pendant. But it would be very tempting. Good thing I don’t have one!
