Found this Whipping/Cotton Wrap Necklace in Maine

Hi forum friends. We have been in Maine for a couple of weeks. Found this “whipping/cotton” wrap necklace in an antique shop. The colors are muted not bright. The wrap is tight and has an oldish look to it.
What do you all think? Is it old or even native made?

Edit to subject and post to change wrap description.

I want to apologize for the use of an offensive but often used term. Thank you to the forum members that educated me. I appreciate you both.

Just to share what I learned from some other Native American jewelry sites - this traditional technique is also referred to as a “back wrap”.

Thank you @Patina I like the term back wrap.

I really don’t know if it’s legit Native made or not; I find it hard to tell for sure with these necklaces.

Super nice! I think necklaces like that are often called “treasure necklace”. I have one that resembles yours, but without the cotton wrap. Mine came from the Siksika people in Canada and i’m very fond of it.

Well, I went back and purchased the 10 strand necklace. It is mainly light green with some blue and spiney oyster beads. The stone colors look better in natural light. I will post a pic once it stops raining in a day or so.

I’m glad you went back for it! I think it’s a great price for such a substantial necklace.

Thank you @Stracci. It came from a Belfast Maine estate sale. The seller said the she bought 500 brooches from this sale along with this necklace.

@here4turquoise 500 brooches?!! Wow. And here I thought I own a lot of jewelry… :slightly_smiling_face:

@Patina Can you imagine?! My mom had a lot of 30s - 50s brooches, but not 500 of them.

Here are a couple of pics of the ten strand. I’m
Wondering if they are vintage and natural stones.
