Some of the animals on my desk ![]()
Cool piece thank you for showing it to us. The milli flori ( 1000 flowers) canes are made in the same way as candy canes and then extruded. At 20 pounds that would be classed as a super mammoth paper weight. These are not commonly made, and would involve over 200 separate glass processes to make.
If you have space off the floor for it I would strongly urge you to move it. It may get damaged quite readily on the floor.
I wondered if it has a signature either on the base or just on the side of the base?
The LE Smith bittersweet vase should be made with cadmium so will glow in the dark, you have one of the better examples it has more decoration rising from the base and will be at the top end of price scale for these vases.
What you’re suggesting is a green crackle glass decanter, I would class as a perfume bottle. The crackle glass is made by submerging the still hot glass into oil or most often water , losses are frequent. It borrows ideas from the Victorian era but I think it’s more likly to be made post 1970.
I’m wondering what the base is like on the “canadese” ashtray. If it is highly polished you might be able to say it’s murano but there are over 140 separate glass works on the island. If it is signed then it’s unequivocal. I’m guessing any paper or foil label no longer exists. If the base is sanded flat and left roughened it is not murano. Lots of copies are finding their way to every corner of the world with murano pieces highly faked.
Animals are always fun yours are no exception. They bring a smile always. The stand out pieces for me are the striped owl and the frog.
Like bronzes the eyes are the mark of quality as they are the most technically difficult part to get right.
Female figure made by Ermanno Nason 1960-1969 when he worked at Canadese. I bought this from a trader who thought it might be a seal or some other animal.
A very uncommon milli flori paper weight from a series of 50 one offs made by Stathern in Scotland in 1979 this is No.4 in the series
It also glows in the dark as the clear glass is Clarified with manganese.
Thank you so much. I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge with us. It can spin on a flat surface, I spin it from time to time when I’m writing near the fireplace
It is marked Rollin Karg 1999.
You are right, the animals are fun to collect. If I see one while thrifting, I have to buy it. All of my glass was thrifted. I have found some great pieces that way ![]()
The female piece is beautiful. I haven’t seen many human shaped pieces while thrifting since I have been collecting. I do have a clown but it’s in a drawer because my husband thinks it creepy lol.
You are most welcome 20 years of glass trading I enjoy it so much this is fun and helps extend my glass knowledge too.

A few more …
Blue and real gold swirl Murano dish, Fumato technique swan, Gold leaf adventurine rooster from Spain , pair of Murano tigers, 1960’s Frank Thrower vase when he worked for Dartington Glass.
If you like glass figure work the stand out master works for me are made by Hoffman, he is Czech IMO far surpasses Lalique. He made both male and female pieces and large pieces might have 15 figures on one vase. I had a small piece but sold it, I won’t post it here. If you are inclined Google his work but be warned they do not have clothes on.
This is not a Hoffman but included it to give an idea of other pieces out there it’s unsigned so maker unknown. It is hand made studio glass but you will find factory moulded examples quite inexpensively too, usually in plain lead crystal.
That is really unique. I couldn’t tell what it was at first. Nice pieces
A couple pieces from my downstairs office.
@CyanideRose18 you have a pair of Murano birds of paradise, I come across quite a few of these many have 2,3 or 4 colours the high end Vanini ones have 10 colours and gold or silver leaf adventurine (in this instance adventurine is derived from the Latin to mean chance, gold leaf is applied then the glass is worked and expanded so the metal splits into tiny pieces by chance ).
The clear wavey top vase once that could be definitely from the 1950’s but in the last 5 years the wavey top has been re-popped so it’s no longer a sure clue for age.
I have a few owls this one is murano 30 cm tall and each fleck is a real gold flake
The next piece is also Murano triple cased in multi colour and large mili flori to resemble cherry blossoms each case layer adds physical depth so the viewer has the optical illusion of true three dimensionality
That case is really pretty. I love millefiori. I have some jewelry made out of it too. It reminds me of trade beads or chevron beads.
The birds do greenish blue color on the back.
@CyanideRose18 I have some beads, I’m not an expert. I think these are possibly from Iran or Afghanistan and made during the 17th century. Any idea
That’s a beautiful strand you have there
I have no idea. Honestly, I just love collecting them.
From my research of beads, well made beads such as these are most likely Nepalese cane glass carousel disc beads. Most are 20th century but I’m not knowledgeable enough to date them. Others are Venetian or African.
@StevesTrail thank you for your help your information gives access to a very quick ID.
An auction house miss identified them when sold and another person with expert glass knowledge also didn’t have specific knowledge of them. Another lesson in trusting certain auction houses ![]()
Thank you once again
Check out the YouTube videos of an old acquaintance of mine Daniel Lopacki (now deceased). He was the bead king.
Love the Mary Gregory style bottle!
These look like 6 layer Venetian trade beads
My glass leans towards lots of Waterford (our Irish grandmother collected that and Belleek), some American Brilliant cut glass (has been easy to find thrifting), Kosta Boda snowball votives, and a ton of Orrefors (wedding gifts). My most collected seems to be blue and white antique Chinese pottery and porcelain like my other grandmother (the one who loved NA jewelry).
I’m a magpie when it comes to “ooh shiny”, but I’ve edited fairly well, so it looks less hoarder thankfully. So I guess I collect to make my house warm and cozy for family and guests.
