Ha! I was in an antique mall today, and I saw this cuff.
Everything on the tag was incorrect.
RJ=Robert Johnson.
Not old pawn. Where did they get that idea??
And not turquoise, but variscite.
The sales lady said “Oh this vendor really knows her stuff!” Yeah, right! Obviously she doesn’t know anything about what she’s selling.
I’m tempted to get it just because the tag is all goofy!
And it did fit …
Funny thing…
I left my loupe at that store. So I went back for it.
Wouldn’t you know, that cuff jumped onto my wrist.
Was it meant to be?
My birthday is in a few weeks, so it’s a b-day present to myself.
This seems to happen to me often!
I felt like it would be foolish to leave it there. I often find myself saying, “What would this cost at Indian Market?”
It would be a whole lot more, so I grabbed it.
What a beautiful cuff! And it looks hefty. I really like the triple twisted band. I’m clueless about variscite; from the pic I think I would have guessed turquoise. I imagine Mr. Johnson would beg to differ about it being old pawn - that would mean he’s much older than he is
Until I got the Hougart’s book, I didn’t know he uses his initials as a hallmark. All of the items I have by him (and purchased from him) have his hallmark as a cursive “Robert Johnson.” What’s interesting is that Hougart’s doesn’t even list the cursive hallmark, so I guess even they have an occasional omission.
@Stracci Now this is the way to have a Happy Birthday. That’s a terrific cuff! It appears to be very well made & the variscite stone is beautiful. It’s looks perfect on you. A wonderful “meant to be” jewelry story.
I guess his stamp has evolved a bit over the years.
When I first saw it, the RJ didn’t click with me.
Then I remembered my flower earrings, and the RJ was the same. I’ve shown next to the terminal on the new cuff.
@Ziacat Oh no, dont be sorry! I was just explaining how I was sure that it wasn’t someone else’s RJ.
I always doubt myself and I go through all the info that I can gather to be sure of myself. I’m OCD that way!
I totally get that! I do think it’s good to know that even Hougart’s isn’t 100% thorough. Milford Calamity isn’t listed in it, and they don’t have the Dark Horse stamp for Reggie Mitchell, just his name.
I’m with you, same - the more I look at it the more I like it. Were you holding out on me when I we shopped? It also looks like it will be an excellent stacker cuff.
Seeing the price on it, and on the one that I bought while with you, I’m really glad I didn’t go for the lighter weight Dino Garcia cuff. It was lovely, but didn’t seem quite worth the price.
I think this cuff will look great with your new Sunshine ring! I also like that stamped band ring you are wearing.
When I purchased the cuff, the guy in the antique mall told me that he had never seen anything like it before. I explained to him that it was neither old pawn, nor turquoise.
I’m so glad for the knowledge that I have gained from Turquoise Peeps, so that I could identify a cuff like this.
Thanks to all the T-People!
This guy works the cash register and he has a booth in that place. He said he knew very little about NA jewelry, even though his mom used to be a dealer.
He is a vinyl record collector. I probably could’ve learned a few things about collectible records from him.
Happy early birthday @Stracci ! Congrats on your new cuff, it’s beautiful! I love how nice and heavy it looks, and the variscite is gorgeous. Was it Vintage Vault?
Thanks @OrbitOrange !
I really like the dark brushed finish with the moody green.
Yes it was Vintage Vault@Nob Hill, where you and I visited. Your NA jewelry intuition is accurate!
They have several new vendors with NA jewelry.
I had a feeling it was Vintage Vault—I could just picture it. But I don’t think they had anything that good that was Native American when we were there. Great find!
