I wondered about Santa Clara, because I know they’re famous for the black pottery, but I wasn’t 100% sure. Thanks for the closer up pictures. I LOVE all these, and that owl is so sweet. I had always wanted a piece of Santa Clara pottery, and was happy to finally get the one at Cameron Trading Post.
The way my mom described the other piece that she was considering at the time she bought the Zia pot, I’m pretty sure it was Santa Clara. And it was also about 50 bucks. I can’t imagine what it would be worth today. She said it was about the same size as the Zia pot. But she bought the one she loved best, and I’m glad she did!
It’s beautiful; I love the unique colors. You know, I also have a lot more pottery around than I realized so apparently I like it too! When we sold our furniture store back in the '80s, a gentleman rented the buildings from us and put in antique shops. I was in there one time looking for a big crock, and my mom said she had a big old one in her basement that she couldn’t hold anymore, because it was too heavy, so I took that one, and like it better than anything I saw in the shops. Gonna make some potato salad to put in it a little later today
Here is my tiny collection. All little knick-knacks that I picked up at sales. They hang out all over the book shelf, but I grouped them for the photo. Clearly I am a bit eclectic. Some of y’alls photos are fantastic! I won’t even try to compete. The little brown bird in the front is stone. The bear is Juan Tafoya.
I love it all! I’m really drawn to that black pottery. And your little stone bird, I would have bought that in a heartbeat; he’s too cute, and I love birds. The green vase is pretty too.
I don’t think I’d find pottery like that at sales here. But maybe I need to look more…
Thanks. I have a lot of luck around here. Most of the tiny pieces cost a dollar. I remember paying 4 for the bear. I would probably get more pottery if I didn’t go after jewelry first. After looking at jewelry the larger pottery is all gone. The green pottery is Roseville.
A quail! Even better! We don’t have them here, but when I visit my best friend in Phoenix they have them everywhere, and I hear them calling. I have a little silver quail pendant that was my mom’s. She loved quails. The other one (an eagle or a hawk?) is really pretty.
@Ziacat well, how ‘bout that; you have a jar by Seferina Bell! Can you make out the bell motif she used? I had one similar to yours years ago (probably in the 80’s) that I traded or sold, and wish I hadn’t (story of my life😆). Mine had more spalling, not uncommon for her pieces! And you have a nice incised black ware Santa Clara jar.
I’m almost embarrassed about the amount of pottery I have, but will share a few more pieces:
The black and red ware jars on the top are vintage Santa Clara, the lower pieces are all Kewa, with 2 large dough owl below.
Wow!! Beautiful! Can I come shop your store? The antelope in the Zuni bowl are my favorite design (I love pronghorn), but your Kewa bowls are especially gorgeous.
I didn’t mean it is actually signed by her; the museum (a very highly regarded one) had penciled in “Bell.” The museum had also written in 55.00 in pencil (been there since mom bought it). I remember now seeing the letters BELL, but didn’t know what it was, till yesterday I recalled our conversation. So of course it is not 100%, but pretty high odds I think!
I showed my hubby your pic, and he said, “nice rug.” I hadn’t even noticed it, and it is beautiful! I can’t see the design completely; is it Two Grey Hills?
I’d bet money it is Seferina Bell, so your Bell inscription makes sense. Many potters of this era may not have signed earlier pieces. But the bell is always fun to see. Ha! Good for your hubby! I’ve had that rug for 20 -25 years and always thought it was Two Gray Hills. Can’t remember if it was labeled when I bought it, I bought it because I liked it and always thought it was Two Gray Hills.
It’s amazing that I’ve used it and others on the floor as a rug for years and am impressed with how durable these rugs are. It’s vacuumed frequently because our Lab loves to sleep on it😄
That’s awesome to very likely know who made my mom’s pot!
That was my first thought on your rug is that it’s a Two Grey Hills. We don’t have any of ours on the floor, but my mom had one on the living room floor for around 45 years. Unfortunately the dog chewed the corners of it , but it still sold for about 400 or $500 at auction, here in Indiana even!
