Hi Zia, I’m wondering if you were able to hike the Old trail down the side of the Mesa. Centuries ago it was the only access up the Mesa. Actually not really hiking, but cautiously climbing down steep steps carved into the side of the sandstone, scrambling over boulder and through narrow passages…fun! Then you walk along the dirt road back to the Cultural Center and museum. Knowing how you like to hike, I thought it would be something you’d like to do. The last time we did it (12+ years ago) I was wondering how much longer they would let tourists climb down the old trail, so I don’t know if they gave you the option.

We did go down the old trail. It was fun, and not difficult; but the sandstone was a little slippery, so we were careful where we put our feet, otherwise no problem. Since I stayed behind to look at some pottery we were the only ones on it. I posted some pics about it in my travel thread in the Lounge category.

Glad you did it; did you take pictures of the old trail? I always think that all it will take is for someone to slip and injure themselves for this wonderful historic trail to be closed. I agree, it isn’t difficult, but challenging in a couple places when you are carrying a piece of pottery

I did take a pic; it’s in the travel thread I have in the lounge category. The only pottery we had was the teeny one I posted above, the potter wrapped it well, and gave us a nice little bag. I spent most of my $ on jewelry (which I was wearing 
).
And yes, it sometimes only takes one lawsuit happy person getting an owie to cause problems. Hopefully they would handle it like Grand Canyon does, and say, “you hiked it at your own risk.”
