When I was visiting too many places selling native jewelry while in the Southwest recently, I noticed a lot more pieces made with lapis. I was told that, as turquoise is getting harder to come by, they are seeing more lapis work, and it is selling well.
Some of us remember a few years back (what, 30 maybe?), when “denim lapis” was everywhere. Here are a couple nice pieces my parents gave me (by Bill Mex and Everett and Mary Teller).
I like them both but don’t wear them much?
Any other favorite lapis pieces out there, denim or otherwise?
Yep, those are beautiful pieces, and i love denim lapis but, mine gets almost no wear at all either. I think it’s because I have a hard time mixing it in with my turquoise.
My new lapis earrings with coral and turquoise by Cheyenne Grabiec, which I also posted elsewhere. I’ve been after lapis earrings since getting a multistrand Kenneth Aguilar and Angie Crespin necklace that has lapis heishe beads interspersed here and there with abalone and other stones. The kind of “blues” I’m pleased to have!
Oooh @RedlandMaggie! I love your lapis jewelry, especially the beds. I don’t have a lot of lapis, but, like Chic, I have some Kewa beads with lapis. The earrings posted by you and @chicfarmer made me realize I have no lapis earrings! How can that be .
@chicfarmer those lapis earrings with the coral and turquoise are wonderful! I think they need a new home…They’d be right at home with my Kewa necklace with lapis beads; don’t ya think? But I have to admit, your necklace is just spectacular..it just glows,
Here’s my Spondylus Kewa necklace with lapis beeds. I’m thinking lapis graduated beads (like yours @RedlandMaggie) would layer great with this necklace.
Your necklace has inspired me to finally do something with the hanks of coral from our grandmother that have been sitting waiting for me to get inspiration, so I bought a couple of multi-bead necklaces that I’ll take apart and make something similar. I have enough coral to make a 7 strand 24" necklace (I think). I’ll post progress since I’ll need input most likely
