I am a retired “baby boomer” who formerly worked as a staff writer for newspapers as well as serving as public and community relations director for a Florida hospital and as executive director of a large Florida agricultural non-profit organization. Also did a stint as an elected city council woman. My interest in the Southwest and Native American “anything” was always there in me but it was my husband - who attended college in New Mexico - who first brought me to New Mexico and the Southwest where I truly became enchanted by the “Land of Enchanted” and then wanted to learn as much as I could about the Native American culture there. Several visits (and subsequent purchases!) to Perry Null Trading and other New Mexico trading posts and dealers literally ignited a passion for Native American jewelry and I wanted to learn about the “best of the best.” Over the past years, I have focused on Zuni cluster-style jewelry made by members of the Ondelacy, Quam and Waatsa families. And I have had the privilege to come to personally know Lorraine Waatsa (daughter of Alice Quam) who is likely the foremost artisan of that cluster style still producing jewelry. At my age, I am not so deeply into acquiring more pieces, but I truly enjoy learning all I can about the stupendously gifted Native American artisans and their jewelry, pottery and textiles.
