I’m a physician who recently finished a 3-month assignment at a Navajo Reservation hospital in Arizona and fell in love with Turquoise and Native American jewelry. I learned a ton talking to silversmiths, jewelry shop owners, and turquoise supply shop owners in Gallup, NM and developed a pretty good understanding of how to identify jewelry markings and the types of turquoise in them based on matrix, colors, and patterns. I also learned a lot about Navajo culture and the meanings behind the art in the jewelry, pottery, and paintings.
