Yesterday, 5.27.25, we made the drive to Toadlena TP. Where we were met by Thelma. She asked if we wanted to see the rug museum. If you’re in the area and you’ve never seen these beautiful rugs, it’s worth the drive.
We are absolute rug rookies and had a hard time picking the perfect rug for our home. Here is the one we chose, Shiprock Yei, 1950s, weaver/family unknown.

Gorgeous! So cool that you got an older one. Now you have to figure out where to put it
If you hang it you will want to have a specific rug hanger, because they can be damaged if they are hung incorrectly (i.e. hanging it only by the corners can cause it to stretch out).
It is an amazing place. We didn’t have time to go to the museum, because we spent about an hour picking out a rug (and we were on a tight timeline that day). I had always wanted a Two Grey Hills rug so I knew that was the place to go. However, it is my understanding that the Yei rugs were first woven in the Shiprock area which is not far from Toadlena, so I’m not surprised you found one there you love.
I was blown away by the piles of Two Grey Hills rugs everywhere - on floor, shelves, table tops - that it was really hard to pick one. I don’t remember the name of the lady that helped us, but I know she was Navajo, because the rug I bought was made by her sister.
Thank you for sharing your rug with us! Next to Native American jewelry, Navajo rugs are my favorite. I’m so glad you got to go, because it’s such a special place, and every time you look at your rug you’ll remember being there.

Thank you @Ziacat It is such a special place. There are way too many choices. It would never do for me to live in this area. I would be penniless.

What a beautiful weaving from a legendary trading post. A Two Grey Hills and Yei weaving are at the top of my list. Your example is a fine one. As @Ziacat mentioned, I think it’s awesome you were able to get one with some age. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you @Ravenscry We had looked at several TP prior to Toadlena. It just felt right being there and buying from them. Maybe our next trip will be planned around a Crownpoint Friday.

I might have to do that also. Back in '21 on our way to Toadlena we took a back road route just so I could drive by the building since I’ve read about it so much in the Hillerman books (I often track down Hillerman places when we travel). It is only once a month so that makes it difficult for us to schedule.
