Got a price offer on a fairly unique looking Hopi piece, but I don’t recognize the hallmark. I couldn’t find this exact feather on any website or Hougart’s book, but I also don’t have any Hopi-specific books.
It’s a super unique Kachin Mana cuff. It doesn’t really resemble any of Jackson’s work from what I can see, but maybe it could have been a one-off? Incredibly unique design, though. I’ve never seen openwork like this on anything Hopi.
Michael Kabotie the great Hopi master occasionally did openwork. Can you share a pic of the shank (back side) so we can better see that it goes all the way through?
I’m not sure why you think this cuff doesn’t resemble any of his work; I couldn’t even find much of Jackson’s jewelry online. Is it because of the openwork? I don’t think that is a reason to discount the possibility that it is one of his cuffs. I have seen openwork done on Hopi jewelry. You could always contact the Hopi Cultural center on Second Mesa to see if they can help with the ID.
Sorry, I didn’t mean to imply I thought it was completely out of the question! I just meant because so much of his work isn’t online it’s hard to determine whether or not the cuff in question is really representative of his a large or small part of his work. Thank you for the resource!
