Belt Buckles & Concho Belts

Hey guys, I was watching some of the videos on the Twin Rocks YouTube channel, and came across this ketoh style buckle. I found the video to be interesting.

Thanks Tom!

This caught my eye as well. It’s awfully uniform and deep, but has just enough imperfection to emit it’s handmade quality.

…are one of my favorite elements of this one. It would be just as beautiful without them, I feel, but I think they add a little something. :slightly_smiling_face:

The fact that this buckle wasn’t going to be standing in the “take a number for leather” line was a big plus.

Keep hunting, Blythe! There are plenty of new and vintage ranger belts and regular belts out there that would look great with your buckles.

Here is a 1.5" Crazy Horse leather embossed belt that wasn’t getting use, so I repurposed it. First, I worked the stitching/thread back to where I wanted to cut the belt at each end, tied off the stitching, cut the leather, finished the freshly cut raw edge to matched the rest of the belt, and added my .75" billets.

Be creative! Remember, “art is anything you can get away with.” :slightly_smiling_face:

Another beautifully executed belt, Tom. Your David Reeves set is a stunner, I love that thing, and it looks magnificent on this belt! Thank you for sharing your lovely photo and leather working prowess! :+1:

Keep us informed, @BlytheEcho, when you scrounge up some vintage or new leather for your buckles!

:rofl: Oh boy, ain’t that the truth, Aaron. I’ve considered some ugly buckles before just because I already had a belt ready to go.:rofl:

My very first post - hope I don’t screw up.

I recently reconnected with my small collection of NA works. As a retired lady I no longer need to care about looking “professional” and have gone through a phase of minimal/no adornment to my daily attire of jeans, t-shirts and cycling kit. But my pieces were calling to me from their closet and slowly are being put into rotation.

Today I unearthed my Plain Jane Concho belt. It’s my only one. Nothing outstanding like so many I see on this forum, but I love it anyway. It came to me via an estate sale several years ago. I believe from my reading that it’s hand made, probably NA. 8 conchos, 9 butterflies and the buckle weigh in at 334 grams. I’m small, so I can’t fit it all on my waist/hips. 2 conchos and 2 butterflies have to sit it out separately. Suggestions for repurposing them are welcome. The belt came with the silver pieces. Should I replace it or cut it?

Anyway, here she is for your viewing pleasure:

@Cicadalady Hi & Welcome. That’s a beautiful concho belt! Since you asked… to me, butterflies repurposed into rings are fabulous looking. Also, one concho would be wonderful as a pin & the other as a beautiful pendant.:slightly_smiling_face:

Welcome to Turquoise People! Love your belt. I haven’t made the plunge for one, but I can admire yours .

One of those conchos could look nice as a bolo. And I really like the ring idea for the butterflies.

Welcome and thanks for that nice intro. Wonderful belt. If you plan to wear it I would keep the extra pieces aside in case one of the back solder joints pops and you need a replacement between repairs and I hate to break up a matching group. If there is dry rot on the leather I would replace it and I see no reason not to cut it.

Thank you, Patina. Great suggestions!

Good thoughts, Steve’s Trail. The leather is healthy and supple. So I can play with wrapping the “tail”. Or even knotting it :slightly_smiling_face:.

Good morning all.

@TAH , thanks for the encouragement to post here and your kind comments.

Here is a buckle that I love - I have a fondness for moderne and believe the NA Jewlery Renaissance of the mid- century was as important as the early beginnings. This cast Yei buckle is one I love for its ingenuity and restraint.

As an aside - what is the group conscious on posting a belt that I once owned but no longer?

Want to stick to protocol and all.

This is an awesome buckle, @August! I have an affinity for all things Yei related. I love the openwork and the turquoise settings in his facial features are an awesome touch. I love this. Thank you for posting such great photos. :+1:

Being that this thread exists thanks to @TAH, I feel he should make that call. Your honesty speaks volumes, and the respect you convey in asking is commendable. :slightly_smiling_face:

Echoing Aaron’s sentiments. That’s a beautiful buckle, August, featuring three "S"s – Sandcast, Simplicity, Symmetry – all at their finest. This is a great example of less is more.

By all means feel free to post your belt. :+1:

Thanks @Ravenscry and @TAH
I appreciate you’re encouragement and support.
Here is the belt THAT I ONCE OWNED, but no longer own.
I don’t have dimensions or pics of the back, just this one photo.
However it was a beauty and I know ( sense anyway ) ya’ll love the early pieces.
Enjoy.!
