Oh yes. One of my fave books about objects and their history is by a former director of the Met Museum who discussed the fakes on view during his tenure. It didn’t win him lots of friends. Thomas Hoving.

It usually doesn’t @chicfarmer. In a space where the subject matter is so highly romanticized, and value is so highly dependent on provenance and the reputation of the seller, learning that something is anything other than represented can be a crushing and embarrassing revelation.
