BP: Large turquoise ram bolo

Have seen a great deal of this jewelry over the years, on both sides of the Atlantic. Sadly, it is what it is.

Freeland’s shop produced massive amounts of imitation Native American jewelry, and turquoise carvings over the years, in Navajo, Zuni, and inlay styles, and used many, many, different hallmarks.

After Freeland blazed the trail, many other producers followed suit, and began producing massive amounts of jewelry overseas. This has gone on, and on, and on for decades. Hundreds of millions of dollars of this merchandise remains in circulation on the primary and secondary markets, and it continues to be imported and misrepresented here in the US, and thoughout markets world wide.

Here’s a brief snapshot of just one investigation, which unfortunately failed to have much of an impact.

Thanks for the link. I mentioned this before, but I have a nephew who started working for ICE in Albuquerque sometime in 2020 (he’s not there anymore, unfortunately for me :weary:). We visited him in '21,and I was wanting to shop for jewelry, which made him really concerned that I would buy something fake. He said the first case (I think it was just tying up loose ends) he worked on there was involving fake Native American jewelry. I doubt it was this one, because I think it was finished before he arrived in ABQ, but I’m not sure; I’ll have to ask him more next time I see him, which should be soon.

Update on this: my nephew was visiting, and I got to talk to him today. I asked him about the case he worked on in ABQ, and he said it was definitely the big Al Zuni case, but he was only in to help wrap up loose ends (he had just been transferred to ABQ). He was talking about how horrifying it was that the fake stuff was everywhere, and about some of the things that they did to smoke out the fraudsters (and that they can continue to use). It was also interesting, because he said even though the FBI began the case, it was actually ICE that finished it.

No wonder he was so worried that I would buy fake stuff while I was out there! He’s a very good nephew to worry so much about my jewelry shopping

Your nephew is certainly on the side of the angels. Fascinating story, @Ziacat. I’m glad to hear the fight against the makers of fale/counterfeit jewellery is still ongoing.
