I can see it needs restrung, but this is for sale for a great price. I need to drive a ways to get it, does it appear authentic in the photos?
I appreciate any input.
@Jamiejo830 Hi & Welcome. That’s a really nice squash blossom necklace. In my opinion, it appears authentic as opposed to costume jewelry, if that’s what you’re asking. Hopefully, others will chime in with additional information.
Mostly hoping it’s sterling and turquoise. Thank you!
@Jamiejo830 Would you be able to post clear photos of the back of the necklace? Is it hallmarked? Stamped sterling or .925? A back photo could be helpful. Thanks.
@Jamiejo830 Thanks for the additional photos. I was hoping for a hallmark but, I’m not seeing one. Also, without a stamp for metal purity, the necklace would most likely need to be tested to determine that. Sorry that I don’t have more helpful info for you.
it looks to me like it has been restrung on some sort of plain wire, and converted to run only one row of beads through the back of the naja, instead of both rows of beads as it was made for.
The beads may be brand new, or polished recently within an inch of their lives. the naja and blossoms might be as old as the 70s/80s, up to the present day. I would call this an entry-level piece, rather than anything of extremely high value or artistic merit.
a squash of this age would have originally been strung on a type of sterling chain called foxtail.
Thanks for the input! It’s broken and needs restrung. Someone definitely made an attempt to fix it, and either failed or gave up. It has wire holding it together just bent over in places, so to not lose any beads. I am not particularly interested in value, just not looking for costume jewelry. I paid $125. I love the style and it feels like it’s real. I’m going to fix it and wear it either way.
Congrats, I’m glad you got it! Yep, buy what you like. Price seems very reasonable, imo, (even though it’ll need a restringing). I hope that you’ll enjoy wearing it.
i think you got a great deal at that price! i think it’s easily worth 2x that or more, and will be a very wearable and attractive once you get it properly strung! Cheers!
Great find @Jamiejo830 . Looks NA to me and IMHO from the late 70s to the 80s.
