Fabulous day at the market

Yep, for the most part, they’re carved from one piece of cottonwood root. Items like a lone head feather, yucca whips, and other hand-held items are sometimes added, but not always. For example, Keith said the antlers on this particular Deer kachina were added. If not, the price would increase significantly.

Here are a couple pics of the amazing jewelry upstairs in the museum. I think the blue cuff was Frank Dishta (not sure 100% on the first name), but I couldn’t find a name for the other set.

And this rug fascinated me; it was in a section honoring Native Americans who have served.

@Ziacat When I first looked at this piece I thought it was enamel. I cannot imagine the time and patience it took to create this amazing piece.

One more from the museum. Traditional Navajo ladies clothing, circa 1930s-1940s

I love this thread! So glad you were both able to make it to the market and had such a great time! @Ziacat I love your new necklace/pendant combo. I can’t recall ever seeing a Pueblo design by her before? That could go in the desert and Southwest landscapes thread. Looking forward to seeing your cuff. @TAH your daughters new treasures are fantastic as well. But did you buy anything?! I know you are partial to the older stuff.

And so cool that the two of you were able to meet up. I love @TAH’s story of just calling out “Ziacat?” to a random stranger. Lol. Good thing you have such a photographic memory for jewelry!

That’s an amazing Frank Dishta cuff. I have a modest collection of Dishta family jewelry and have seen this style cuff in books, but they are so rare and never come up for sale. Definitely a grail item for me.

And yes! I do have a pair of earrings by Quill Bill.

(“And now for something completely different”)

Years ago when we would shop at the pawn shop in Flag (Four Winds Traders), we saw older Navajo ladies doing business there dressed very much like this.

@OrbitOrange, yep, those are what I remember!

I read somewhere online that she used to make these, and then stopped, and has recently revived it again. I hadn’t seen them previously either.

Thanks! Our daughter is obsessed with Cheyenne’s style and work now. Nothing for myself except a burrito. But Arizona is coming up in August, so I’ll be on the hunt!

I can hardly wait for the trip details and pics of your loot!

No, I just haven’t gotten around to it yet. I’ll do it soon!

While the jewelry in your first two photos is amazing, I’m in awe of the woven rug honoring Diné Code Talkers. I wouldn’t have interpreted, or understood on my own, that the darker figures with weapons represented their shadows. Thanks for including that typed bio, and all the photos.

This is the necklace I was wearing that Mary’s daughter recognized. The red petals in the flower are made from red lace Jasper from South Africa that she said Mary can’t get anymore.

It is lovely. I’m not sure how you do it, but you find the best unique pieces.

Thank you! Although every one of Mary’s pieces is very unique!

Hey @TAH…what at show is in Arizona in August? Probably something I’ve missed…the Gallup Ceremonial and several shows in Santa Fe and Albuquerque in August.
After seeing these great pictures, I’m really salivating to get to Santa Fe for Market. And @Ziacat, just fyi…we’re going to Zia for Feast day! Love watching the dances, visiting with friends and new acquaintances (and feasting😬).
I’d really love to get to the Eiteljorg show some time. I have a friend who is a high end collector who lives in Indianapolis, so I have no excuse….

The Hopi Arts & Cultural Festival is on August 24th in Flagstaff.

If you go to Santa Fe, also check out the artist map for the Free Indian Market held the same weekend a couple blocks away at Federal Park. There’s some pretty amazing artists switching over to that one.

Agreed, you have no excuse  Come to the Eiteljorg, we can hang out a bit , and I can feel better about my spending when I have another shopper friend to encourage me!

@Bmpdvm, we’re not attending a specific show. Just vacationing and hitting all of the trading posts and galleries in Sedona, Prescott, GCNP, Navajo Reservation, and Old Scottsdale. That should keep us busy and broke. :slightly_smiling_face:

Sounds maybe you will hit a lot of the places I went to in April. I did leave some jewelry for you to buy

And please keep us updated on Ogg’s!
