That makes sense…you are hitting all my favorite places! Have a great trip…hope it’s not too hot!
I thought Ogg’s was closed permanently. I stopped in a few weeks before they closed and the ladies said there was no permanent new location planned but possibly another business model in the future. They kept extending the closing date so I always assumed there wasn’t much of a plan.
Ernie Lister’s shop in Prescott is always worth a stop. It’s small but he’s a true legend and always a pleasure to speak to.
I posted this after we went to AZ.
News about Ogg’s Hogan
So I’m hoping!
Interesting… not at all what they’ve been telling us. I’m in Phoenix and go up to Prescott for day trips pretty frequently— honestly Prescott is getting less interesting by the day. It’s really changed.
It would be nice to see them reopen with a fresh take. Maybe they’ll start adding some more contemporary work.
This is where we differ, there are a lot of places with new, but it’s getting harder to find vintage in a trustworthy place. I sought out Ogg’s because of exactly what it is; like a mini museum. But I want them to do whatever they need to succeed.
We were in Prescott in April, and I still highly enjoyed it, but Phoenix! Oh my. We get there fairly often to visit friends, and it is growing waaaay too much IMO.
I agree @AZBoots! So many of the artists we visited at market in the past are now at the Free Market. But always some new discoveries at the SWAIA venue. The Wheelwright has a small market on Friday and Saturday. And a lot of artists and sellers are set up at the El Dorado; that in itself can take all day….essential to prioritize! So much to do, so little time🤗
Hey @Ziacat, do you ever get to Santa Fe? For fabulous vintage jewelry from a reputable source, you can’t beat Rainbowman. It’s right off the plaza and IMO the best for quality vintage jewelry. Like Ogg’s, one of those Ooh-aah places!
Also Shiprock on the Plaza is fabulous for all vintage NA items. They don’t have as much jewelry, but what they have is wonderful.
Another option is at the El Dorado Hotel during SWAIA market. There are many (actually too many🥴) reputable sellers of collectible vintage items; tons of fabulous vintage jewelry.
I’m sure there are many more, but from my experience, these are my recommendations. So, as great as Oggs is/was, there are other wonderful options😊.
I have been to Santa Fe close to 10 times throughout my life, last time in '18, and I found some beautiful items there, but a lot of stuff is higher priced than what I find in other places. I did get into Rainbowman (it’s in my Trading Post Guidebook ) last time we were there and it was amazing, but unfortunately I had spent most of my budget already So I need to go back and shop there before I spend it all!! Last time we were there I got some Ira Custer earrings at a different store.
In '21 we were in ABQ visiting our nephew and did some good shopping there, but then we headed up to Grand Junction to visit his brother (the one at the National Monument), and so we didn’t have time to go to Santa Fe. I thought we’d get out there more often, because he thought he’d be there a while, but now his job moved him to DC, bummer. However we did get to shop at the fabulous Cowboys and Indian Antiques in ABQ. Have you been there?
Santa Fe is where I really fell in love with the desert southwest. I went on a trip with a friend to visit her brother way back in about '87, and that was the start of my southwest obsession!
What was also so special about Ogg’s was Jeff himself. He loves to spend time with his customers more than many places I have been. And what I meant was that there are a lot of places with contemporary work, and places like Ogg’s are closing. I’ve been to some of the places you mentioned, and they aren’t the same feel. At all. But that’s life. Also I could afford more of his items, and that’s not the case in much of Santa Fe for me. I’m just lamenting change I guess.
The last time I visited Rainbowman and Shiprock on the Plaza (just being honest here) most things were out of my price range.
Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed Ogg’s. I always stopped there when in Prescott and have purchased a number of things. Though now that I’m thinking about it, I don’t believe I’ve ever purchased jewelry there. I just appreciate a mix of vintage/antique and contemporary. Medicine Man is a great mix for me.
I love Shiprock and find the staff very helpful and knowledgeable. Even as a museum-sort of visit, worth it for all serious collectors, especially of jewelry and textiles. They are peerless in their curating and quality.
I love Rainbowman too, such a sweet, funky little shop but also with tippy top and very diverse merch. Fun fact, the owners were pioneers in the appreciation of and collecting of Kewa Depression inlay jewelry. The trusty jewelry books showing early examples of Santo Domingo/Kewa always have pieces from their collection.
I will have to check them out again whenever I get back, although I don’t consider myself a serious collector; I just buy what I love, will wear, and can afford. Sometimes I feel uncomfortable in stores that have merchandise out of my price range; mostly I think feel like I might be wasting their time (that prob partly comes from our family having a small business for years). That was part of the beauty of Ogg’s. Like my hubby said, you felt like it didn’t matter to him if you purchased anything, because he so enjoyed sharing his knowledge. The owner of the pawn shop/store I used to faithfully visit in Flag years ago was the same.
@Ziacat It’s true that when sellers spend time with customers it results in a very positive experience, and more sales😬. I know you have been to Oggs multIple times; I’ve only been there acouple times. I find it interesting that our experiences were different. Jeff was there; he was nice, but was not overly outgoing; I didn’t feel any repore. The first time I thought his prices were pretty good on some things, but not a whole lot better on some pieces I was interested in. Maybe it was because I went there with the expectation that prices were so low. The second time, a couple years ago, his prices seemed higher and he told us his wholesale buyers told him his prices were too low. Maybe he raised them…Who knows?
I haven’t compared prices, but my feeling was there wasn’t a big difference in prices between Oggs and galleries like Rainbowman or Garlands (on items I was interested in). Just my opinion😬
Regardless it’s too bad he’s closing, I certainly would have gone there again! And it’s sad if your favorite place is no longer; keep positive thoughts he may establish at a different location🤞.
@Ziacat I agree that Ogg’s had that uniquely old-timey atmosphere partly because he was turning up and offering super-rare frontier-era memorabilia that no one else had, and partly because he always had his coterie back there jawboning all day.
@Ziacat I started being a big Fan of Caitlin Clark last year and I find myself looking forward to her next game. Have you been watching Indiana Fever? She plays like a guy and her passing is phenomenal. Another fun thing to do in Indianapolis…if you can get tickets.
I’m not a basketball ball fan, but my hubby agrees with you.
