Heishi, Show What Your Holding

I’m liking this necklace a lot. And I agree, looking closely the edges of the beads seem to be just a bit rounded, giving it a softer appearance than sharp edges. I’m sure it has that wonderful snakeskin feel slipping through your fingers. Also, it is so well graduated, someone spent some time getting this right. As far as the maker, I wouldn’t guess…maybe someone else has seen a similarly made piece.
I’ve had several pieces restrung with excellent results. What area are you in, maybe someone on the forum may have a suggestion. Otherwise you can fund a local dealer in Native American jewelry who you trust and see if they have someone who can restring it. Another option is to contact well known galleries and talk to them about restringing…Perry Null has been used by several people on this forum.
Congrats on a great find, and good luck!

@Ziacat, I really believe that if you act generously to others (as you did with this very desirable heishi necklace), that will come back to you in due course.

May you find another turquoise/silver-bead necklace that is even lovelier and at an even better price!

Beautiful necklace! I agree in that it’s going to be really hard to tell who made it. And I wouldn’t worry about the little nicks. I was told about my jet heishi necklace that if I saw those then that meant it was real, not block. So it’s a good thing!

I sent a cuff to Perry Null that had strings of heishi in it, and some had broken. I had been told by a different store in the southwest that it wasn’t worth fixing, because it would be too difficult. I sent it to Perry Null, and they fixed it beautifully for an extremely reasonable cost. So I recommend them! Let me see if I can find a thread in here that talks about sending stuff to them.

Edit: found it. Here’s the address, but you might want to call them first and ask them a price range.

And welcome to Turquoise People!

So talking about fixing a necklace, made me remember that I have a cuff with heishi!! I was so focused on necklaces it slipped my mind.

Thank you, how sweet of you! And I’m in no rush. I’m kind of at that point in my life where I’m really trying to think hard about how much and what I buy. I want to make sure that I will enjoy and wear what I purchase. I guess one of the things I’m taking stock of is how much can I really wear items on a somewhat regular basis. Sometimes it’s so tempting to buy something just for the sake of buying it, if that makes sense, and I would rather not get into that mode, but it’s so hard not to with these beautiful items.

@Bmpdvm your collection is fantastic, but the spondylus necklaces are such a gorgeous color…wow!!

I’ve always thought these heishi cuffs were interesting; yours is especially nice! As I recall, several known artists made them (can’t recall who), and probably several unknown artists. Is yours signed?

Thank you @BlytheEcho! They’re a combination of vintage and more contemporary. It’s wonderful that Spondylus can be a variety of colors; I do like the deep color of the older pieces.

Mine is not signed. It was pawn from my favorite store in Flagstaff (that sold mostly pawn) many years ago - now closed of course :weary: It was a great price since it had a few pieces missing which the owner pointed out to me right away, but I bought it anyway, because I liked it so much. I sent it to Perry Null a couple years ago or so, and they did a great job fixing it. I’m still careful when I wear it so that I don’t bang it on things, and break it again. The owner told me it was Navajo, and the silver is quite heavy.

I’ve had several necklaces restrung at Perry Null, as well as a setting repair on a turquoise cuff, and a couple of new watch heads mounted on cuffs/watch tips. I recommend them 100%, great workmanship and excellent pricing.

This thread has been an educational treat and a feast for the eyes!

I’m going to share again my heishi and bead necklace, if anyone has any ideas about an artist (cones stamped SMT), I’d love to hear as I found it in the local consignment shop.

I popped in to the shop today and they had a turquoise chip and Heishi necklace on string similar to ones you have shared. I didn’t take a picture of it, but the necklaces in this photo are very similar to it. It has a hook and eye. At least one piece or turquoise had a crack, and they were asking $85….it was too long for me and not my style, but maybe I shouldn’t have passed it up.

@here4turquoise Oh, thanks, that’s really nice. I like that pop of turquoise color, too. Wow, those earrings are long.

What a wonderful thread! Heishi, or beads, are my favorite incarnation of turquoise. I find them to be the most tactile of jewelry, in that smooth rolled beads are such a joy to feel.

Here are some of my beaded (heishi) pieces.

  • The necklace and joclas on the left - I’m not sure if they are Pueblo made or Navajo.
  • The fetish necklace is Kewa, I believe, and is jet and turquoise.
  • The turquoise and coral earrings are by Ray Lovato.
  • The pipestone / turquoise necklace is Kewa and as I’m typing this I’m embarrassed to say I’m blanking on the artist’s name. But they have a square signature bead by the clasp. I’ll update this when I remember it at 3am. They are the smoothest, silkiest beads that I’ve personally handled.
  • The next necklace is actually mother of pearl and turquoise. Those MOP beads are TINY and narrow. Absolutely amazing that someone could make beads so small out of that material. I believe it is also Kewa. I’ve never seen another like it.
  • The necklace on the furthest right is Pueblo made, coral and turquoise finished with Navajo silver beads.

@Indriaza…Nice collection spanning differing styles of heishi necklaces! Your jaclas are especially nice. However, me thinks your Ray Lovato earrings need to come home to be with some relatives…like in my collection (ha). The turquoise does look very simular to what Ray used in my necklaces.

You have a lovely wide variety of heishi. My eye was first drawn to your jet fetish. I then zoomed in and realized the MOP and turquoise is WOW. Of course you can never go wrong with any Ray Lovato piece. Thank you for sharing your heishi with us.

Thanks! When I first got the MOP necklace, I thought that they were actually iridescent bugle seed beads (see photo) because it never occurred to me that they could be shell and my eyesight has tanked the last 2 years. Even the seller had thought they were seed beads.

Oh, it’s MOP!?
Wow, I thought it was jet. Well, it’s gorgeous either way
