This petite pin/pendant packs a lot of versatility. Just 1" from the tip of the beak to the tip of it’s wings it captures the beauty in nature.
Does anyone recognize the maker from the Hallmark? Are they still crafting jewelry? When did the crossover of making jewelry both suitable for pendant or pin begin? Thanks everyone. OOPS-almost forgot pix!
Perhaps Zuni Edaakie. Zuni Sterling Silver Inlay Hummingbird Set Pendant/ Pin Brooch/ Earrings Edaakie | eBay
That does look like the piece and the initials. I thought it was Zuni when I saw it, I am wearing the piece right now.
I love hummingbirds; all birds really. Yours is such a cute one! I have a couple Native American pins (with no bail) from my mom that I wear as pendants. I thread a leather cord through the bar; one of my skinny heishi necklaces also fits. I have one of those pin/pendant converters, but it doesn’t work on a couple of my pins cause it makes them hang funky.
Maybe sometime I’ll start a thread on Native pieces featuring birds
I have no idea of when the crossover was first seen.
Great ideas on how to wear pins as necklaces. I was lucky to find this pin with a bale. Thank you, it is very cute and petite like the hummingbird them selves. (The hummers here in CT are the smaller kind. I will never forget seeing the hummers out West which are larger.)
That would be an interesting feature on NA jewelry featuring birds.
It’s interesting that the only hummingbirds east of the Mississippi are the Ruby Throated. But out west they have many kinds! My cat loves to watch them out the window.
We have several types of Hummingbirds here in Central Wisconsin.
My neighbor even has white ones at her feeders.
I’m glad you mentioned that! It’s weird because my Audubon Bird app says only Ruby throated hummingbirds are east of the Mississippi, but now I Googled, and I guess the others are uncommon visitors to many of the states, even IN. It’s weird the app doesn’t show that. Now I have to keep my eyes open even more!
Ooh, I’ll show up for a birds in jewelry thread. One of my favorite motifs!
Cool! I’m off work for a couple weeks so I have a little extra time. So maybe soon! I love birds in general, and my mom was an avid bird watcher.
Here are CT I have seen both Rufus and Ruby throated. The ones I saw out west were yellow, as I remember. It was so long ago, either TX or Colorado. I had a fetish necklace that was all birds, carved from some kind of yellow stone.
That’s pretty cool; you are fortunate, because according to the Audubon app they’re a rare visitor to some of the southeast coast. But there are probably always strays, and then sometimes they’ll end up coming back.
On my app I counted about 13 different hummingbirds in the Southwest, and a lot of those are only in the most southern portions of AZ and TX. It’s fascinating!
If you like birds, I recommend downloading the Audubon Bird app into your phone. It has recordings of their calls, which I find helpful.
I’m really going to have to keep my eyes open. I would love to see the rufous here. Now I have another bird to look for! It’s hard because the females often look so different from the males.
Anyway, I love your little hummingbird!
Hello Everyone. Just to clarify the dates. The Hummingbird Necklace I got this weekend at an estate sale. The photos were taken the same day 7/23/2023. The date on the photos read 2010 because we used has a handheld microscope with a camera attachment. We just got the camera at a tag sale a few weeks ago and have not yet figured out how to change the date. Does that matter when posting?
