Hoping someone can assist in identifying a pendant for me. I’m a newbie and unsure.
I’d really appreciate any advice. Its a beautiful pendant and very well made.
Pendant was purchased in Kingman Arizona, and marked Nelson Morgan.
Letters in the hallmark look the same, but not quite the same as some of the other hallmark examples
I’ve seen. Missing the leaf or feathers in the hallmark.
There have been a couple of names that appear to be similar. Nelson Morgan, Nelson Morton and Nathan Morgan. All with slightly different hallmarks.
Turquoise is uniform colour, pitted with what I think could be pyrite?
2x pictures attached. Would really appreciate any advice you may have regarding
hallmark and turquoise.
Hello @StrawberryB. Welcome to the forum The Nathan Morgan and Nelson Morton hallmark is somewhat similar to yours. Reference is from Hougart’s hallmark book, 5th edition. I use it quite often.
It’s a bit of a running joke around here that Kingman turquoise is so common, that whenever you don’t know what type of turquoise you have the answer is likely to be Kingman. It’s a huge mining district, and there’s a lot of variation in what the stones can look like. Given that you bought it in Kingman, and Kingman is one of the few mines that’s known to sometimes have pyrite, I’d say it’s a pretty good guess.
Thankyou for showing me those hallmarks. mine is missing the leaf or the feathers, so was hoping it would look familiar to someone. To confuse matters further, I’ve come across a necklace for sale that has both the hallmarks on it!!! Two different ones on one item…
Thanks for the help with the turquoise ID. It was sold as Kingman but being a newbie I wasn’t 100%. Nice to know what it is The colour seems really consistent so I’m thinking stabilised and dyed ??? Would that be right ?
Looks like Kingman to me, and if you actually bought it at the Kingman mine store I wouldn’t doubt them. Probably is stabilized, because most Kingman is. And, yes, I often guess Kingman and we have fun with that
However, it’s not just us. Here’s a quote from the PuebloDirect site.
Welcome to the forum @StrawberryB! It is always frustrating to find confusing information when searching to identify a hallmark. I have a nice Zuni fishscale turquoise inlay piece that was identified by the knowledgable previous owner as Robert Leekity. The hallmark for Leekity is almost exactly the same as that for another artist, Robert (and Berniece) Leekya:
For me it’s hard to know whether these 2 artist shared a hallmark, or if they were confused at some point and passed on incorrectly. If you take into consideration the artist known styles, and the era they produced, it might help.
I came to the conclusion that mine is Robert Leekya. But, unfortunately items identified online can be misidentified, so it’s far from a sure thing. Good luck!
