This looks like a Hopi design to me (roadrunner) however given the untypically rough etching marks - Hopi hash marks generally seems to be finer and more even - I tend to think this is Navajo work. The C Sterling hallmark would lead me to think Navajo as well. Any thoughts? Thanks! Lin

The silversmith used a vibratory engraver in an attempt to mimic Hopi fine background stamp work. Saw work is pretty clean, but the rounding of the outside edges is from a polishing lathe rather than the flat, worn sanding belt (which leaves crisper edges) used by Hopis for finishing. May or may not be native work. Without provenance you never know.
