Identify turquoise in necklace

Hi I recently bought this necklace at an estate sale. A couple of the pieces of turquoise have a clear hard substance extending from the edge of the stone. Is this a coating or is this natural. Also any ideas as to origin. I’m a novice I appreciate any input

What you’re seeing is stabilization resin. Only a small percentage of turquoise is “gem grade,” or hard enough to hold up to being worn in jewelry. Stabilization is a process where a plastic resin is impregnated into the stone to harden it. Sometimes the stone is color enhanced at the same time; sometimes not. This allows the majority of turquoise which would not otherwise be able to be cut and set in jewelry to be used. Sometimes it is done rather sloppily and you can see clear bits on the outside of the stone as you can here.

@Tracyc, May I use your picture as an example and share/show in my group?
