Does anyone have any NA Baskets? I only have one but would love to see other member’s pieces and collections.
Hi. What information do you have about this basket, as in culture of origin?
Nothing really. I bought it because I liked the colors and design. So perhaps it is a cheap knock off? Still…I would like to see other baskets people have. I think they are beautiful.
We only have one for sure Native made basket, and it’s Navajo. Bought it at Shush Yaz in Gallup a long time ago. We had a great time shopping there; purchased the basket, a Teec Nos Pos rug, and my Charlie John cuff that I posted recently. I still have the pawn ticket which says “Navajo wedding basket.”
This other basket was my mom’s, and she couldn’t remember anything about it except that she got it out west somewhere. It looks Navajo-ish, but I’m not at all sure, because I really don’t know much about baskets. It doesn’t feel as nicely made as the other one; I suspect it’s Mexican, but . The whip stitching throws me off.
Nice and tight coils. I love your pottery too.
Thanks! Believe it or not, the pottery on the right is Incan. We bought it a long time ago at a really cool little antique store in Gatlinburg, TN in the middle of all the tacky stuff and restaurants. An older British gentleman owned it, but it has since closed, of course. The other little piece is simply a candle that I bought on PEI, and is made from red sand from their beaches; I use it to hold up the basket
Your basket is also very pretty. Hopefully we can both glean some information!
These baskets were made by my husband’s great aunt. She was Hopi.
They range from about 6" to about 10" in diameter.
Those are so beautiful!! What a treasure.
Nice! I love the horse and little figurines.
@Stracci, great Hopi Second Mesa coiled baskets! Even better is that you know who made them, and shes a relative!
Hi @nanc9354. Nice coiled basked, love the shape! When you bought the piece was it stated to be NA? I’m no basket expert, but I have several California Indian baskets and coiled (second Mesa) Hopi baskets. Although yours is a coiled basket, imo this is not Hopi work. I don’t think it’s NA. I’ll love to hear other opinions. I’ll post a few of mine for comparison:
This is my “best” Hopi basket. I bought it from an elderly man in the 1990’s who bought it in the 1950’s at Hopi House. Can’t beat that for provenance! It has Kachina faces, corn, and other animal design with blue padre beads used for adornment. I love the form!
The baskets on the bottom 2 shelves are also Hopi:
I have a few baskets and although I don’t know a lot about baskets in general, I’m learning!
Here are a couple of Hopi sifter baskets!
The first is 19 inches in diameter and 5 inches deep with a diamond pattern to the weave!
The second is 13 inches in diameter and 3 inches deep with a whirling log looking pattern!
Hi…I picked up the basket in question on the cheap. It is an olla basket and perhaps not NA. I guess my knowledge of baskets is about the same as my knowledge of NA jewelry was a few years ago. Not much. I should stick with things that have provenance.
Does anyone know what kind of basket this is? For picking crops? It is old and I have looked online for similar ones but cannot find anything. I just really liked it, it is very heavy and handmade. Thanks for any help.
Here is something I picked up with provenance…signed by Dennis Mullen.
Looks like a wicker laundry or picnic basket from the 1950s & 1960s as I remember similar ones growing up.
Ooh, I also love art glass, but don’t have much. Your Mullen piece is very nice!
I agree with StevesTrail, your basket does look like a vintage picnic basket. I remember the way the top opens. Looks like a BIG one😊
Isn’t it too flat to be a picnic basket?
Well, I was assuming the photo was taken looking down at the top. If it is indeed flat, I haven’t a clue🤔. Great wicker work!
