I was not sure where to share this “new to me” rug. Scott and I found it at an antique mall here in SW VA. Please let me know what you all think. I bought it for the colors. The size is 72” x 52”.
I think the snakes are awesome. And you have a nest of them.
I wasn’t really thrilled with the snakes but the colors won that battle.
I’m honestly not sure if your first one is Navajo or not, not really getting a Navajo vibe (the border, the pattern, the snakes). There’s a Facebook page that you could post it on, and find out. I can’t remember the name of it, I’m not on Facebook, and my husband’s not here (he is on it although he never EVER looks at it
) so I can’t look it up at the moment. I can check tomorrow. Can you post a picture of one of the corners?
And that second one is awesome. I wouldn’t have the 850 bucks to spend on it right now (and I definitely don’t have the space for one that size), but if I had I would have brought it home. That rug is what they call a storm pattern, one of my favorites. Really a pretty good price for that size.
Oh, I like the snakes. I noticed them immediately. It’s a beautiful rug & I know that it’s getting a wonderful new home.
@Ziacat Here are a couple of corners.
My guess is that is not Navajo for all the reasons I mentioned, plus there are no ties on the corners. Not that they are always done exactly the same, but in general the ends are tied off. Plus the border is unusual, and navajos generally don’t use snakes in their art. It’s really beautiful though!
But I am no expert!
And now we have severe storms rolling in, so I need to pay attention to the weather ![]()
Thank you @Ziacat I appreciate your help and I value your opinion.
Be safe!
Congratulations on your new rug, @here4turquoise! It looks like it’s portraying Navajo pictorial elements and a Crystal-ish design, but it doesn’t look particularly Navajo, to me. I agree with everything @Ziacat mentioned, especially concerning the border and end finishes. It’s still beautiful, nonetheless!
Now this storm pattern is something entirely different. It looks to be in incredible shape, and it’s size is very impressive. If you had the room to enjoy it, for the price, I’d answer your question with a YES!!
That it comes with a photo of the weaver makes it extra special. I also agree with @Ziacat on the price, this should be a couple thousand, at least. With the apparent fineness and complexity of design, I’d think it would be worth even more.
Here is a somewhat comparable, albeit a bit less complex, rug being sold by Medicine Man.
Thank you @Ravenscry . We are going back to the store tomorrow.
Yep. That’s what I’m talking about. That rug looks like it would be a great floor rug. It’s huge! Some people choke about putting them on the floor, but a lot of Navajo do that (the weather has majorly quieted down here so I’m ready to look at the forum again; next I can bring my two small jewelry safes out of the basement
).
I was thinking about the Facebook site that deals with Navajo rugs, and people can get really snarky on there also, like what @Patina dealt with on the other site. There are some wonderful extremely knowledgeable gentlemen on the site that are actual traders or former Trading Post owners, but everybody else has their opinion of course, and occasionally they can get pretty rude. I’m thinking maybe your better bet would be to contact someone at Medicine Man Gallery to see what they think about that first rug. I’m wondering if it could be Mexican or South American, but I really have no knowledge of rugs outside of Navajo and some Mexican.
Good for you for going back to get it!
Here are the corners of three of ours…
Top left is a Teec Nos Pos, top right is a Storm Pattern, and the bottom is a Two Grey Hills.
Snakes are very bad JuJu the in Navajo tradition. Cool rug, but it isn’t Navajo.
It was thinking I was told that when I was trying to figure out my dad’s Zuni buckle with the snake on it, but I wasn’t sure, plus it just doesn’t really look like one. And I doubted my own gut reaction.
Thank you @mmrogers. When I started to research the rug, the bad JuJu popped up several times, more so than the speed and healing.
It’s an awesome rug!
Do you have any idea regarding its origin?
