It has been 21 years since we have had a puppy. Most of our rescue dogs came to us between two and four y/o. This time we decided to get a puppy as it will most likely be our last chance to do so at 60+. We have been reading a couple of books on house training and obedience as well as socialization.
Here is my question. What is the best food for a puppy? I have been reading a lot of not so good things about most major brands. What do you all feed your K9s?
@here4turquoise Congrats on your new addition to the family. He/she is adorable & beautiful! Our Vets (cat & dog) always speak highly of both Hills Science Diet & Royal Canin pet food products. Probably best, though, to ask your new puppy’s Vet what they recommend for your little one.
She’s absolutely adorable! Those eyes! I want to pick him up and hug him. We had a husky when I was a kid that had one blue eye and one brown eye. All those names are cute. I read somewhere that animals respond well to names that end in a “y” sound. I don’t know if that’s true, but I’ve named my cats with names that end like that. Except for little Zia who didn’t live long
I haven’t had a dog since I was a kid, so I have no idea on food. But I’ve used Science Diet for years with my cats. Their kidney food seems to be helping Mosi. But I agree, I would ask your vet. I think we have a couple vets on here; maybe they will have an opinion…
I think it’s good you’re socializing him. My dad always wanted German Shepherds, and they never got socialized, and they were kinda mean even with family members. My sister-in-law has a German Shepherd that they got as a puppy, and they introduced him to everyone so he’s quite friendly (although you couldn’t break in the house, he would not be friendly then ).
Aww, adorable! I love her! I love the names Marley and Pepper, too. I have a mini Aussie named Bandit. Is yours full size? Mine is a black tri; my parents have a brown tri similar to yours.
What a cutie. The name Sedona jumped put at me from the list.
My Husky/German Shepard was Sierra, but she picked her name from the list we had. You might want to try some names and see which she responds to. That’s what we did.
Thank you @Ziacat We met him at a local brewery. He was there with his foster family. Long story, short version, he was labeled as a biter and no one could put a collar on him. Hubby said give me a collar. The rest is history. Ziggy is definitely Scott’s dog.
Wow he’s beautiful! You and I have the same taste in dogs and jewelry, lol. Border Collies are my favorite, I got a mini Aussie instead as I don’t have the time and space that a Border Collie needs, but if I did I would definitely get one.
We’ve always had both a Border Collie and an English Shepherd (semi-rare stock dog in its own registry), which are the greatest if they fit your lifestyle. More recently only English Shepherds. Our girl has a distant BC relative in her lineage, and that hint of BC is detectable Love this whole group of related smarties.
I consider both the smartest breeds. Our rescue ES died a couple years back. Fiercely independent and the sweetest dog - unless you were a furry critter on the run. We have a confirmed kill list including woodchucks, raccoons, squirrels, moles, etc…. We now have a rescue BC. Previously severely abused. Too smart, spoiled, and now runs the place.
Don’t advertise the ES too much. Still not, and hopefully never recognized by the AKC and thus not ruined by breeders yet.
Our last two, both purebred English Shepherds. Big guy (on right) is now in Heaven, sadly. Yes, pretty cool that they’re bred for stock and farm ability, not AKC conformation. @StevesTrail our Border Collies were also purebreds and only in the BC registry, not AKC. We had BCs before the breed was AKC recognized, though they could always compete in agility.
All these dogs are so sweet! Takes me back to when I was a kid. A big dog just doesn’t fit in with my life right now, and I’ve become a cat lover. @StevesTrail my Mosi doesn’t get to hunt as much as she likes since she’s an indoor cat, but boy can she catch spiders and socks. Almost everyday when I come home I find a sock or two downstairs that she’s left for me
I’ll share these pics of the dogs I grew up with. Captain was our last German Shepherd, and then we got the Husky, Brute. Huskies aren’t nearly as smart as German Shepherds, but they are awesome dogs. Unfortunately he died of a heart attack at home 6 months after my dad did. My mom said she didn’t think she could stand having another dog, so that was it. But good memories!
They come in sable and white, black and white, and tricolor. I’m not sure if there are merle variations, haven’t seen that, but it’s possible because they’re selected for herding ability and other factors. I discovered them years ago when I researched whether a dog breed exists that was like a border collie but bigger, more general purpose farm dog, and more chill. That is pretty much exactly the MO of the English.
@StevesTrail your sweetie pies were so pretty. Ours have always been on critter patrol.
Thanks for the explanation, and I understand why you were looking for something like that. My brother-in-law has a border collie mix, and it is absolutely insane. Sweet, but crazy. It saw a barking dog on TV, and literally smashed their big screen TV trying to get to it
