As you can tell, I know very little about the eastern seaboard. But we’ve been talking about a road trip along that area. I do remember seeing a program about Mackinac Island years ago; no cars allowed? Love seeing the horse drawn carriages.

We are a looong way from the Eastern seaboard; we are in Michigan on the Great Lakes, which we often refer to as the Fresh Coast, unsalted and shark-free  And yes, Mackinac Island does not allow cars. Ferries run back and forth constantly, and then you hike, bike, or ride in carriages. You can even rent a carriage. The Grand Hotel was featured in a 1980’s weirdly popular movie called Somewhere in Time with Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeve.

Fun fact, Mackinac Island was the second National Park after Yellowstone. Later it became a state park. And did you know that the Great Lakes hold 20% of the Earth’s fresh water supply? Isn’t that crazy?!

I loved hearing all the horse stories in this thread. I’ve never owned one but I’ve been fortunate to ride and take lessons most of my life with my coach who is a dear friend.

And I love your horses @Bmpdvm and @TAH. I can’t imagine having to put your horse down. I cried for weeks after losing my kitty.

And I will have to check out the book. I have a fabulous one that is a written by a reporter who followed a Navajo basketball team as they tried to make the state championships. I can’t remember the name of it, but when I get home I’ll post it. My brother gave it to me about a year before he died, and it’s been one of my favorite books about the Navajo Rez.

Well, maybe I should have said I know little about places east of the Midwest (duh). I must have heard about the location at some point, but it didn’t stick in my brain. However, it does look like a fabulous place to visit!
Have fun!

Yes, that was a tough one. He was with us for 24 years and he never hurt anyone.

Great pics. Always wanted to get there. I hear there are lots of adorable towns along the way, too.

I visited a nice NA store there a few years’ back…it had downsized the second time I visited, but got a nice Ray Tracy pendant and a lovely Jemez jar there. Would love to go back, but that is so true of so many places  It was easier when the offspring was in school in Chicago, we had a reason to head that way. Enjoy!

I visited Mackinaw Island when my kids were smaller. Such a fun place. @TAH …it’s hard to lose a loved animal or pet. We had major flooding here a few weeks ago. I had gone to my back porch at night and heard the wind blowing so I wanted to see what the clouds looked like on my front porch and it was strangely quiet and I could see the stars…so I returned to the back porch and heard the loud wind but when I looked up to the sky I could also see stars. then it dawned on my that the noise was the river. I wanted to go down the stairs and check out the river so I turned on the back light, only to see the river in my back yard and my chicken coop floating a few yards from where it had been, I ran into the flooded river and got 5 chickens to safety. We lost two, don’t know where they went. Probably down river. Even though I had them for only a few months, I felt very sad. Can’t imagine having a horse that long and having to put it down.

Oh my goodness, that had to be so frightening! I cannot imagine that. I’m glad you didn’t drown saving them!!

Not sure what store that would be, except I think there was a really nice one across the bridge in St Ignace, but every time I tried to stop there it was closed. We did shop at one of my favorite stores in Mackinaw City that has some Native American jewelry. Not a lot of large items, but a whole bunch of really pretty little Zuni earrings, and this year they had some beautiful rings. I know they travel out west to buy jewelry for their stores.

One more bridge pic! Although I know people who are kinda scared to drive it (it’s 5 miles long total).

Oh you could spend weeks traveling up and down the coast. We have many that we love, and visit often.

Yes, it makes for a sad trip to the barn for several weeks. My family has owned horses since 1966, so unfortunately, we have gone through it a few times. Thank you for your empathy.

Thank Zia…it was not too bad for me…only up to my hip and the water was not moving that fast where I was. The chickens only had a couple of feet of air so I was worried about them. We did have a few of our neighbors outdoor furniture float past us.
