Northern Lights 3-25-2025

Here we go again. A fairly strong geomagnetic storm was predicted for today through Thursday.
This was not as spectacular as the one in October 2024, but still very nice.
It was my first time experiencing the Aurora in below freezing temps. It is in the 20’s right now.

The Northern Lights were even visable in parts of Southern Illinois and Southern indiana through a camera lens.

These photos were taken between 8:30 and 9:45 from my Central Wisconsin driveway. I could see some of the pillars with my eyes. The rose color was very vibrant tonight.

Maybe I will see them again tomorrow night on my way home from work.

WOW!!! I live in the Southeast and we haven’t had a whole lot of this. Beautiful pictures, hope I get to see it one day!

That sounds like an incredible experience! Seeing the Northern Lights is always magical, and it’s great that you managed to capture those moments with your camera. It’s fascinating how far south the auroras can reach during strong geomagnetic storms, like the one you mentioned that was visible in Southern Illinois and Indiana. Experiencing them in below-freezing temperatures must have added an extra bit of adventure to the night!

The vibrant rose colors you mentioned are particularly interesting because they occur when solar energies collide with nitrogen at lower altitudes. It’s amazing how different combinations of gases and altitudes contribute to the spectacular range of colors.
