Purple spiny vs sugilite?

Anyone have tips for distinguishing between purple spiny oyster and sugilute? Recently acquired a ring with a purple stone so dark as to almost appear black. Pretty sue it’s spiny. I think that is a Derrick Gordon mark. Thoughts? Thanks!!

Ha! unintentional bird flip. I was just trying to get a good pic with the ring in one hand and the phone in the other. ring kept flipping over, and phone kept wanting to use flash. shrug

It can be difficult when you don’t have another to compare it to. When you have a collection the purples are different. Your piece is spiny. In the image the three middle pieces are sugilite, outside pieces spiny.

thankyou Jason! this is helpful. I had a feeling i was right - my impression is that sugilite is usually a much more electric sort of a purple. I’m glad it’s spiny.
