Reading sizing on a mandrel correctly

Hi all,
I think it will be a quick answer on this but I haven’t been able to find an answer elsewhere.

I understand how to use a mandrel to read a ring size on a straight band but I can’t find any guide for a wide band with a tapered back. For example, if I have a ring that’s 20mm at its widest and 10mm at its narrowest, do I read the size from where the narrow or wide side falls on the mandrel?

Slide the leading edge of the narrowest point of the ring shank up the mandrel until it stops. The size at the front of that edge is your ring size.

A ring that is very wide at the widest point is usually about 1/2 size larger than the measured size.
