Real or really unreal?

Just visited my parents, and pulled out my old turquoise from their glass cabinet.

Bought this first one about 35 years ago as turquoise, it’s about 1" long. Was still a kid, so surely it was not hell expensive.

The second one I bought maybe 25-30 years ago as turquenite (I understand now that turquenite is dyed howlite), it’s a bit larger.

Now I wonder, is the first one also turquenite/howlite? As I have heard here often “no, don’t do this or that test”, should try the acetone test next?

Sorry, I really do not remember where I bought them, most likely at mineral fair. Also sorry for the bad photos, had to do them in a rush. Can take more during next visit if we need them.

If i were in your shoes then i’d try the acetone test for sure.

Both look like dyed Howlite to me, @gt75. Would be interesting to slice one in half and photograph how deeply the dye reaches inside the interior of the material.

Thanks @mmrogers .
Would like to use the acetone test during next parent visit. Don’t want to slice up and risk ruining a real turquoise.

Agree. Best to proceed with caution. I understand the sentimental value as well.

Okay, the smaller one is turquenite, it has lost a lot of black & blue color when rubbing against ear buds with acetone.
The bigger one could be real turquoise, I could not get off any bit of color, but surely it could just be better dye that doesn’t come off using acetone.
The next should be the hot needle test, I guess.
