@Ziacat Thanks Patty! Replying here as to not hijack the James Rogers thread.
Since Ogg’s was closed and I’m more of a vintage collector, I only found this little Fred Harvey era hat pin at Cameron Trading Post. I was hoping to find a vintage naja, but no luck this time. Almost bought a large Ganado rug at Hubbell, but didn’t know where to hang it.
All was not lost because I was having fun buying stuff for the rest of the family. In particular was this Jock Favour coin silver cuff for our daughter’s boyfriend (our future son-in-law, no doubt).
Cool stuff! Cameron Trading Post is always a must stop for us. That cuff looks heavy! Don enjoys shopping with me (or at least he’s learned to act like it since he really has no choice ) even though he doesn’t buy anything for himself jewelry wise. I hear you on rugs. I want to buy more, but I have no space. I restrained myself this year.
Gorgeous pictures! We love both those places! And Gouldings too, of course. How are the roads in Monument Valley? Last time we went we tried to drive through it, and we about bottomed out our rental car. However, they had a very wet monsoon season that year which made the roads worse. But we both thought next time we go we probably ought to take the guided tour.
I also had read that the trail to White House Ruins in Canyon de Chelly is closed except by tour (I think they were having problems with vandalism in the parking lot). Do you know if that was the case when you were there?
Wow, you’ve been busy! Amazing pics! That cuff looks super thick! It’s not hollow like a shadow box is it? It doesn’t look like it! Were you planning on bringing a new horse home with you? He’s a good looking fellow! Glad you were able to get out for some fun! I haven’t even began to plan my next trip yet, but I’m starting to think about it!
Hot, dry, and dusty. We took the 2 hour truck tour. Didn’t want to damage the minivan rental.
Hiking trail to White House is still closed. We had to cancel our Canyon de Chelly Jeep tour because they closed the main road into Chinle for 3 hours for a festival on the morning of our tour. The only back road around it wasn’t passable.
The cuff is solid coin silver with repousse circles and stamp work. Jock’s work is absolutely stunning in person, like this ketoh…
We bought Chaco here in Indiana back in June. He will be the “new horse” until he’s around awhile and we get to know him inside and out. I was just extra busy working with him since we were gone for a couple of weeks. The photo was taken at our little home on the range.
Garlands had a bunch of his pieces when were there in April, so beautiful.
When we drove Monument Valley road last time we were there, it was horribly rutted and bumpy. We were on a slight uphill part of the road on the way out, and there were big holes and drifting sand, and my hubby couldn’t see, because the sunlight was coming in at a bad angle. I literally had my head out the window saying “left!” “right!” to get us safely out. So next time I think we’ll take the guided tour
That’s a bummer about the White House Ruins tour. We’ve hiked it a few times, and took a guided tour to it and another part of the canyon once. The tour was worth it, but it was so nice to be able to just hike down. Oh well! Last time we were there they had amazing rugs in the lodge trading post for fabulous prices, so we bought an Eye Dazzler rug.
I especially love your picture of Monument Valley with the sunset. You could frame that!
Wonderful pics, fab trip. Thanks for sharing! Nothing compares to seeing Spider Rock in person from the overlook–I actually experienced vertigo from the scale of the vista, and its majestic beauty.
I do love Monument Valley, who wouldn’t. Our jeep tour finished close to sunset, and another jeep tour was on its way out but had a breakdown. Darkness was firmly creeping in. Our Navajo guide just laughed and said something to us to the effect of, “He’ll figure it out” and went on her way getting us back. LOL
I thought TAH and all the other horse people on here might enjoy this… Last time we were at Canyon De Chelly I bought a mug from a Navajo lady selling things at one of the overlooks. She hand made this mug, and I love the hummingbird.
Such wonderful photos! Must have been a fabulous trip! We’re thinking of a Southwest car trip in October, and Monument Valley is always a must. The light in the Southwest in late fall is just magical. Was it overly crowded when you were there?
So frustrating the trail to White House Ruins is still closed…since 2020! I was hoping by now it might be open. Guess those of us who have enjoyed it in the past should feel fortunate!
Glad the new caballo is getting broken in and part of the remuda😄
Canceling our Canyon de Chelly Jeep tour was disappointing. Our tour was to include Canyon del Muerto, so I could see Mummy Cave - the ruins that Earl and Ann Morris excavated in 1923 and the subject of the book I read, Digging in the Southwest, by Ann Morris. You old timers might remember my thread from 2022 regarding the movie based on her book. You know, the same movie THAT I’VE BEEN WAITING TO SEE SINCE I HEARD ABOUT IT IN 2020, BUT HAS STILL NOT BEEN RELEASED! (rant off )
Speaking of Canyon de Chelly and horses, I took these photos of horses roaming free (open range, I presume) along the canyon rim road.
Pretty crowded with mostly international tourists. We drove up to see the view from Highway 163 heading south into Monument Valley - the location where Forrest Gump stops running. Ten years ago, our daughter laid down in the middle of the highway for a picture. No one was around and no cars were on the highway in either direction. Five years ago, there were more people, but not overbearing or unpleasant. This year, there is now a prominent sign that says, Forrest Gump Overlook and tons of people and cars on the road making it nearly impossible to take a photo. And the people refused to move out of the way of oncoming traffic. Most of the cars and people were behind me in this photo…
