Red coral ring?

Hi guys.
I saw this red coral ring in a vintage mall, and I’m wondering about it.
It’s only marked FM inside. $64.00
My first thought was Zuni, but I don’t know.

The only thing holding me back was the really skinny shank. It’s thin sterling wire split three ways, you guys know what I mean.
Way too thin for a ring like this, in my opinion. Sorry, I don’t have a pic of the back.

Just wondering if anyone thinks this is a treasure too good to pass up.
I’ll be passing by this mall today, and wonder if I should stop and get it.
Thanks for any and all responses,!

FM as in Fred Maloney?

It is a nice looking ring and the price seems low for one of his rings.

@fernwood! Thank you!:heart:
Yes, this must be Fred Maloney.
I guess I should go back for it!
It’s so different from anything I have, that’s why it was calling to me, I guess

Hmmm. Whether it is Zuni or not, it is a cool ring and with your talent, you can make a bigger shank. If you really like it, go for it! I think it is nice!

@nanc9354
I dont think I can replace the shank because of the inlay.
But I could make an insert to widen the shank, maybe.

@Stracci Hi ~ um, I’m kinda on the fence about it. My spidey sense says it’s not Native made but, I wouldn’t want you to miss out on a deal 'cause of my opinion. Yep, I know exactly the type of shank you described.

I just checked Hogart’s to see if I could get a timeframe of when Maloney was working. It’s not unusual for the older rings to have a narrow split shank band. I actually prefer them in most cases over the wider ones that are now the norm. It’s a beautiful ring and if the price is right, I might take a chance and buy it. I’m not familiar enough with his work to be able to say yay or nay

Malony is listed as Navajo. The ring is lovely and it’s $64 I might take a chance. Is it the right size for you?

Is this what the FM looks like? It is a beautiful ring, but I would be nervous about a thin shank. I’m so tired of them flattening when I wear them.

@Patina I believe the maker is Navajo, based on what everyone is saying

@Islandmomma
The ring is a bit big, but if I make a sterling insert that is wider, that will correct the size for me.

@ziacat
Yes, that’s what the stamps look like.
I think I will go back to the shop and look at it again.

Ok, so it’s a good thing that I put a question mark in the title of this thread. Because the tag says jasper!
But I bought it anyway, cause I really like it.
I’m fascinated by the construction, and I’m trying to figure out how it was made

I did loupe it, looking for growth lines, there weren’t any, so it is a hardstone after all.

The solder has discolored a bit, which I can fix.

And it fits after all, so I don’t have to monkey around with the shank.

It’s a great ring even if it’s Jasper! I hope you enjoy it!

Can see why you thiought it was coral. That hue of jasper is not common.

Comparing it to some red coral that I have, it is very close in color.
I am intrigued by the construction, and the amount of work that went into this piece.
