Scrimshaw buckle...deer or elk antler?

My dad bought this buckle at an art fair in Minnesota back in the '70’s. I always assumed it was a deer antler, but my husband wondered if it’s an elk antler. I’m thinking it’s not big enough for that. I still have the receipt that we found in a drawer, but it doesn’t say.

Good thing I double checked what I had typed, it said elf antler

I think elk antler might be right.
It seems way too big for a deer.

I wondered, cause the White Tailed deer here aren’t very big, but the Mule deer out west seem larger.

Any animals experts out there?

So here’s a pic of it next to the base of a small moose antler we have. So maybe does seem a little large for a deer? Dad paid about $40 for it in 1975. I don’t know if the type of antler has anything to do with the price, or if it’s the quality of the scrimshaw. I’m clueless with this.

Here in Wisconsin I have seen deer antler mounts that are about 2.5" in diameter at the base.

This measures at it’s widest 3". So who knows.
