I’ve really enjoyed this thread, Patina, and seeing your purses. Matter of fact, they’re so beautiful, I’m wondering if I could pull off carrying one if I simply changed the name to an All-Purpose Sportsman’s Field Satchel. ![]()
After seeing your lovely collection of purses, and knowing of your appreciation for tooled leather, you may get a kick out of my (only
) wallet. It was made for me by a friend of my father’s that used to make dad’s bass guitar straps. If you would care to see it, I’d gladly share. ![]()

Easily, Tom.
I wouldn’t hesitate to acquire one and refer to it as my Archeological Tool Kit Rucksack!

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. Oh, I think you could pull it off but, ya might need one of those behemoths to make it work
.
Yes, indeedy, I’d like to see that wallet.
Here you are, Patina. I’ve been looking for years for an old Navajo button to replace the contemporary concho with, but, obviously, haven’t had much luck.
That’s a great looking wallet, Aaron, and has worn beautifully over time! The strap is in the shape of a spur strap. Pretty cool. ![]()
Wow, that’s striking! I’ve never seen a wallet like this before. The tooled design is beautiful. Ooh, I’d be going down rabbit holes on a mission to find a Navajo button, lol. I’m partial to vintage items that are monogrammed, dated, or have initials. This is such a wonderful gift, and memory, to cherish from your father’s friend. Thanks for sharing it!
Thank you, Tom and @Patina, for your kind words. To me, it is a special piece.
It sure is!!
Jim and his wife were of a horse family, and he made a lot of his own tack.

I have sooo many times, but just have yet to find the right one, for me. ![]()
This is a real beauty, Aaron. Fantastic!
Thanks Mike! I can’t look at it and not think of the art of engraving. The beautiful designs you yourself have executed and shared have been a real treat to admire. ![]()
Thanks, Aaron. I really love the look and feel of western leatherwork, and have been admiring, and enjoying all of the great purses on this thread. Would love to pay homage to the style in engraved silverwork that has the classic look and feel of good western leatherwork. It’s on my ‘to do’ list.
That is a beautiful wallet, and so unique. I’m certain you deeply cherish it.
I actually really like the concho. To me the leather tooling has a cowboy feel which fits with the rodeo-ish concho, plus apparently it was your friend’s vision for the wallet. It reminds me of the awesome rodeo buckles that are given out to the winners. But that’s just me ![]()
Thank you, Zia. I like the concho, as well. As I mentioned, he made a lot of his and his wife’s tack: so he had nickel silver conchos and buttons like this on hand. It definitely blends well, and like you pointed out, was his original thought. ![]()
Hubby has been dabbling in leather craft recently.
Inspired by the gorgeous purses and wallets shared by @Patina @RedlandMaggie @Ravenscry , I accompanied him to our local Tandy Leather shop.
OMG, I am smitten! And that’s a bad thing for me, cause I go down the rabbit hole and it takes me a long time to come out.
I tried my hand at it and it’s not hard! Here are some leaves I just did. This was my first try. Wallets and purses, here I come!
I really look forward to seeing the marriage of your lovely silver with this newfound hobby that has you smitten!

Is it just me, or are you one step closer to crafting your own belt? ![]()
We used to have a Tandy, but they left years ago. I was in there at least a couple times a week! ![]()
@Ravenscry Haha, I’ll probably start with a coin purse!
@Stracci we have a young leather artist in Pendleton who has patterns and crafting supplies, he does lovely things with leather https://twentythreeplus.com/
It’s funny that you linked this…I watched his tutorial just before trying this leaf sample!
This guy, Joe Meling, is a great teacher. I understood the process right away!
Thanks for your kind words about my leather purses. Creating a leather coin purse sounds like a fun project! We’d like to see your step-by-step process just like with silversmithing…
