I’m new to learning about native jewelry. I came a cross this necklace while out antiquing. Can anyone tell me about it? The beads look like they are handmade and the clasp looks old and no marks. But… I’m a newbie so, just learning.
It has a Navajo look, but minus a hallmark no way to say that 100%. Sometimes without a hallmark if bought at a legit store, then we can still say Navajo, but otherwise it’s often not a sure thing. I’m not sure if the beads are handmade. The seams look a little pronounced which often means machine made, but I can’t tell positively from your pictures (others are better at that here, hopefully they’ll chime in). It’s a pretty necklace with a pretty piece of turquoise. No way to know what mine without provenance.
I can definitely see inconsistency in some of these beads so I understand why you would assume they are handmade. By inconsistency I mean the stripe across the middle of each so not look congruent.
As far as where the turquoise was mined I can’t say, but the beads look silver! Agreeing with Ziacat that no hallmark and the look of the piece feels Navajo.
I’ve learned that when I don’t know and even if I think I know which niche mine the turquoise comes from, we’ll just call it Kingman turquoise ! The silver looks clean so unless where you got it from decided to get rid of the tarnish, it might be on the newer side.
Edit: was being facetious when I guessed where the turquoise was mined. Kingman turquoise comes in many forms.
