It’s named “Wild Horses of Nevada”. You’re in good company with your thoughts about this painting. Its one of my favorites also and is on the cover of “the Art and Life of Maynard Dixon”
And yes…he finally has a short ponytail (or a pig tail as I call it

Chester Kahn (1936 - 2019), a Navajo artist who painted murals on the walls of buildings in
Gallup and around the Southwest.

The painting above reminds me of the 1967 film, Africa: Texas Style, with Hugh O’Brian. Here is the movie poster artwork by my favorite Western artist, Frank McCarthy, who started his career as an illustrator for book covers and movie posters then eventually focused on Western art and became a member of the Cowboy Artists of America.

I really like that one as well, Tom, their silver just pops!
I thought the one containing the petroglyphs was just neat. I perceived it as two “modern day” shepherds, an older one at the reigns teaching the younger one at the rear of the horse the history of their culture, the saddle blanket is a cool touch as well.

I love the second one, especially since we took a Canyon de Chelly hike with a Navajo guide, and he pointed out glyphs that we would have never seen. We also bought this little carving from a Navajo gentleman at the monument who said he was inspired by the petroglyphs, and carved it in a piece of sandstone.
