The Long Goodbye
My latest issue of Arizona highways has an article called Beneath the Veil, which is old photos of Native Americans from Arizona highways photographers. Here’s a few…
This is was taken at Shungopavi (one of the Hopi villages) taken in 1944 by Milton Snow.
This one was taken by Simeon Schwemberger, a Franciscan missionary (don’t know the year).
And this one is my favorite. I don’t see any jewelry, but I had to add it. It was taken by Allen C. Reed, and was titled “Ram With Four Horns.” Again, the year it was shot was not listed, but it originally ran in AZ Highways in1950.
The article was written by LeRoy DeJolie, a member of the Navajo Nation., who is a photographer.
Ray Swanson, Navajo Daily Word, 1981
Alfredo Rodriguez, A Light Load, 2013. Had to post this one if for nothing else than the detail reflection of the sky and ground in the silver conchos. Fantastic.
This is fabulous!
Thanks for sharing! I’ve long had an idea for a gigantic barn mural, and maybe this will tip me to doing it!
I love Rosetta Santiago’s work. These are great!

Oh, I think that photo is also in my Trading Post Guidebook! It looks really familiar…
sure would like to see the selections on that player
It is. Good memory.
My framed print by Armado M. Pena, Jr. showcasing Native American/Southwestern elements and a seated figure wearing Native American turquoise jewelry. Also, a small sandpainting with the Yei wearing a turquoise and coral necklace & earrings. Handwritten on the reverse is: “Male Yei. Yazzie”.
Beautiful pieces, Patina. Really like the sandpainting and its frame.
@TAH Thanks! I recently took a look at this wonderful category. I’ve really enjoyed seeing all the amazing artwork posted here. I have a few more items that I’ll try to post during the week.
A vintage postcard of mine. It would’ve been a thrill to see these ladies in-person wearing all their fabulous turquoise jewelry!
