Last fall we went to a favorite Taos restaurant, chic and intimate kind of place. In walked about 8 or 10 highly striking individuals, all more or less suited out like Maggiori (and for all I know one of them could’ve been him). It was a hat and fashion fest like I’d never seen. Ladies and gents both. In particular the hats were clearly a super important feature in their looks, all handcrafted and “heritage” in styling (not cowboy hats). The lot of them were, evidently, creatives of various sorts, maybe famous painters. Everyone gawked.

I came across this photo while researching the Wetherills of Kayenta, during my reading of Traders to the Navajos. John’s trading priorities and sense of fashion were obviously in order: it appears to me that he has a lovely Navajo buckle on his belt.

I say yes! When I wear mine, I carry a small lunch pale housing a Western diamondback. Anytime someone is rude or pokes fun, I shake it and open it near their shins. 
Works every time.

Gosh I hear y’all on that. Have yet to actually see a rattlesnake out west (although my friend has killed a couple at her house), but one time I was hiking with my niece in a isolated area, and we heard a loud rattle in the sagebrush close to us. Needless to say we ran, and were very glad our bare legs weren’t bitten.

A bit of snake trivia:
You can learn a lot if you attend the rattlesnake hunt in Morris, PA. You want to be point when hiking. The point alerts the snake. The second person gets bit. At least thats how it’s supposed to work. Good to keep in mind. And unless point steps on the snake.

Well I guess that means I love my niece, because I was the second person 
And I always hear when you’re hiking with someone and there’s a bear around you just need to be able to run faster than the person with you.
Mind you… That is not official bear safety advice…

Wow! We have a rattle snake roundup near where I live in Texas. I’ve never heard of like events being held anywhere else before. Crazy!
Morris looks like a pretty town to visit. I don’t think anyone would visit Sweetwater if not for the round-up.

This lady (from Instagram) is showing how she turned a buckle into a necklace. She slipped the buckle onto a narrow folded scarf. I imagine you could use a sash or wide ribbon as well. A very smart look!
(Edit: I would personally put some masking tape over the nub on the back of the buckle, sort of like a patch, to keep it from catching on my shirt.)
