Vintage Zuni Rainbow Dancer: Naja or Bolo?

I just picked up this 5.5cm long Zuni rainbow dancer. Looks older to me. My question: was it a bolo or a naja to a double strand necklace?

Bolo. He’s a neat one!

Older and bolo slide, very nice! This is the early version of a bolo slide mechanism.

Very nice @StevesTrail! I’m definitely going with bolo.

Echoing the others here, congrats on a lovely, earlier Rainbow Man bolo slide!

Actually, it is neither at the moment.

A Bolo, or more accurately, Bolo Tie, is, very specifically, a type of neck tie for men made of braided cord or leather that is tipped in silver and is fastened about the collar with a decorative pin or slide that allows it to be tightened like a tie.

Najas are the name for one type of decorative slide for Bolo Ties that is very particularly shaped like a horseshoe. To my knowledge, Najas are the only type of slide that have a unique name.

Everything else is generally called a “Slide” with, perhaps, some description of the artwork like “Kachina Slide” or “Arrowhead slide”.

That said what you have is beautiful and, I agree that it appears to be an early period Rainbow Man Slide for a Bolo Tie.

Thanks for the technical correction. Reminds me that “bolo” is often used incorrectly.
