I would really love any and all opinions about this pendant. I saw it at a sale this morning.
I was hesitant on this piece for a couple of reasons, but I would really like to know what y’all think. Just trying to learn more!
Now you’ve piqued my curiosity. What made you hesitant, and why would you ask for our opinions without offering your own take?
I’m not sure. It seemed the bail to me looked a bit off. The shape of it, and the scroll design on it? My first reaction is that it looked a bit like a Barse bail. Also the white specks in the turquoise. I haven’t ever seen that. But I have not seen near as much turquoise as you guys. But the rest of the silver work and aging looks good. The turquoise itself looks good if it weren’t for the white specks? But, IDK?
That’s why I asked you guys. I didn’t give my opinion, because I really don’t feel qualified. I haven’t seen or held that many quality pieces. Just stuff that I pick up at sales around here.
Also the sale did not have many quality pieces. Lots of costume. The only other “good stuff” was a couple of Mexico pieces.
I thought the same thing about the bail, but I don’t know about the rest of it. My Blue Gem turquoise stone has white specks in it, but they are teeny tiny.
At first I thought the specks might be paint or something that splashed on the pendant, but I couldn’t feel them with my nail. Although I did feel the matrix with my nail. Thanks for your response!
I took a gamble on a pair of earrings. They were just $20. After looking closer at them at home I do not think they are Native American. At best they are real coral and not glass. But for $20, they are still a cute pair of earrings, and since I don’t own any red coral earrings they will do for now.
Thank you for elaborating @chris. It’s helpful to understand your concerns. The bail appears to be cast, not handmade, so in that respect it really isn’t like the rest of the pendant. The Turquoise appears to me to be stabilized or more likely treated Chinese material (color added). White flecks in the mother rock may be natural inclusions (calcium or aluminum salts), or may be material mixed with filler. Hard to tell from the photo alone. This isn’t an outstanding stone by any means, but it is pretty.
I would have also guessed it was a Chinese stone. And IMO if they’re asking $150 like it says on that tag, that seems high.
Thank you so much! I still feel new to this. I haven’t had enough opportunities to handle and study artist made pieces. All I have learned is from forums, articles or books. I have a few good pieces in my collection but don’t get to see and handle varieties of quality made pieces. This makes me unsure when evaluating items.
But I am definitely learning! Thanks to people who share their pieces and knowledge.
I totally agree. I was discussing the piece with a friend who was contemplating purchasing. I was saying that I didn’t feel confident it was a quality piece. I told him why, but then wanted to make sure I was not giving him completely inaccurate information or advice.
