Hi Tara. “White Turquoise” is a misnomer and a market name. Geologically speaking, there is no such thing as white turquoise. What you have here is called White Buffalo, aka Dolomite. The black striations are chert.

Turquoise is a phosphate, which means that copper and/or iron are present, which gives turquoise its blue or green color.

Is chert added to the dolomite?

No, chert is a naturally occurring matrix or host rock.

Is this a common material in NA jewelry? My ring says NE sterling on back. Seller thought it was plastic.

TaraFawn75 - Please don’t stop asking questions, that’s how we all learn!!
Bree gave you true facts and I learned White Buffalo is actually a trade name for the dolomite mined from the Otteson Tonopah, Nevada mine and I learned Howlite is not White Buffalo as so many sellers claim. Check it out here: White Turquoise Demystified | Native American Jewelry Tips

Thank you for your nice message, I have many items I’m curious about & I do try to figure it out on my own, I find turquoise people to be the most reliable and everyone here is always so kind. I feel like a mooch always asking for information with nothing to contribute knowledge wise, maybe one day!
