Whole stone or missing a piece?

I am considering buying this ring (online). When I first looked at it, the grayish brownish section in the bottom left looked like missing turquoise. I contacted the seller and he says it is not, it is just a dark area of the stone. I love everything about the ring except it just looks like part is missing. Can someone tell me if that is correct, there is not a piece of turquoise that fell out, that it is fine the way it is, structurally speaking.

Looks like pitting matrix to me. Matrix isn’t usually smooth :grinning:

It could be filler that was used in a vug. That used to be common.

i agree, looks like chert matrix, almost.

for the OP - this is just a natural feature of the stone, and the way the person who cut the cabochon decided to shape it. sometimes you start with a bigger chunk, and as you shape it, surprises emerge!
