This was my mothers. My father bought it for her in the 60s or early 70s I believe. She always called it a squash blossom but not certain that is technically correct. I believe it is Zuni.
It has a stamp of S.A.E. on the back of the lower/largest circle. Looked online but haven’t seen who’s hallmark that is.
A picture of the hallmark would be great. I couldn’t find the hallmark as described in any book, but it always helps to see the actual stamp. It appears to be Zuni, I wouldn’t have thought it that old if you hadn’t known the history. You have several E Zuni last names.
I have included some images of the same idea in new pieces.
Did a little hunting, and one connection I found for BAE was the Bureau of American Ethnology which apparently gathered extensive collections of artifacts from Navajo, Zuni, and Hopi artisans.
I don’t know if they stamped the artifacts though?
Hi there, just browsing Hougart’s and Betty Etsate’s name came up. “(1951-; Navajo). Active since 1970’s. Some cluster work, mostly needlepoint.” Her marks include B.A.E.–she had several others.
