Belt Buckles & Concho Belts

How about a smaller concho belt that would fit through belt loops? For example, this Roger Skeet, Jr. belt looks large…

…but here is the same belt on display. :slightly_smiling_face:

OrbitOrange mentioned that, but for some reason I don’t like them so much when they are smaller. And I think even with a smaller one that I would like, it might be out of my price range. But maybe I’ll keep my eyes open next time I travel or shop at the Eiteljorg.

I have that same book!

Here’s a little something. 58 pieces of natural coral in a 4x6" buckle. Still trying to find who JR is…

Wasn’t he on Dallas? Seriously, that’s gorgeous!

I posted the belt here about two years ago, I’ll see if I can tag you on that thread

Hey Bmpdvm, if it isn’t too much trouble, I’d still love to see your belt. :slightly_smiling_face:

I’ll share another one while we all await @Bmpdvm

  I love their work and always have a fantasy I’ll get one of the cow/steer bolos for no money on eBay or elsewhere. It’ll just pop up and I’ll see it, and done…sigh, this is not panning out.

Do we think the Appaloosa effect is cowrie shell?

Stunning. Congrats!

Yes, it’s cowrie shell! I think it’s such a cute and clever representation of the Appaloosa’s spots. I don’t think their work is too crazy priced but I’ve yet to find one “for no money,” lol.

@OrbitOrange Wow, do those colors pop in your photo! Thanks to my OCD, I noticed you even have the keepers pointed in the right direction. :slightly_smiling_face:

@TAH @OrbitOrange I am so bad! I apologize…I did take the photos in February, and thought I had responded. This is what happens when one is moving out of state.
This is the belt that I was told was likely by Roger Skeets Sr. It’s very heavy and long. I removed one concho and one butterfly to wear it. When I was in Scottsdale for the Heard Show, I was talking concho belts with some nice folks at Dennis June gallery. One of the elderly men there said it certainly could be Roger Skeets Sr. So that all I know😊:

This is another concho belt I occasionally wear. Another unmarked oldie!

Thanks for reminding me! I’d love to hear any and all opinions about these belts.

Oh, those are both fantastic! No helpful information on if the top one’s RS Sr. but it strikes me as the right time period.

@Bmpdvm Thank you for the photos! Both belts are beautiful. Here is a belt attributed to Roger Skeet, Sr. in the book I referenced in my original post. Can’t help but notice similar design features that are present in your belt.

Thanks @TAH! Some time ago when I tried to research the belt, I saw one with the wing-style buckle similar to the one in the book. My buckle is more simple, but you are right about the similarities in the conchos… and the butterfly’s are also quite similar! Fun stuff; thanks again!

@chicfarmer your JHQ buckle is fabulous! Of course I love anything JHQ! Still looking for a pendant on beads he made that I almost bought years ago…one of those things I’m still kicking myself over! Lately I’ve picked up a few things by Cippy and Waddie Crazyhorse at shows. The talent is definitely carried on!

@TAH, etc. As I was going through some boxes of Native American items I came across a couple concho belts I had forgotten about. This one is unusual in my opinion. It tests sterling and has information, I’m assuming the original owner, on the back of the buckle. No hallmark. It was in a grouping of estate items I purchased years ago. Have you come across anything like this in your research on concho belts. Not my favorite belt, but I’d love to know a bit about this style of belt. Thanks!

A quick Google turns up that he was a Santa Fe artisan named Dale A. Harris, per Adobe Gallery. Not known to be Navajo, and not in Hougart’s.

@chicfarmer Good eye! I couldn’t read the last name, thought it was Yannis (Ha). It’s a heavy well made belt. I do like the tray Al Anthony has; stylistically, it’s similar to the conchos. What do you think…1970-80s?
Thanks!
