Belt Buckles & Concho Belts

Oh, duh, of course! I hadn’t looked it up so didn’t know what it was. Thanks!

So I finally found the photo of my mom (and me in '69) wearing the cast buckle with Bisbee turquoise that I inherited from her (lucky me!). It’s hard to see.

But mostly I’m posting this for fun, to see if any of you sleuths can tell where this picture was taken. If you’ve ever driven to Grand Canyon, you pass this on your way there in a little town called Valle which sits at the junction

of US Rt 180 and State Rt 64. Don’t think it’s open anymore, but when I went past there in 2017 I believe it was still there.

Any guesses?

Yes, my hubby said I gave too much away. Although it’s not actually in Williams. It’s address must just be Williams. Does anyone know if it’s still open?

From their website:

Yabadabaoo! Bedrock is OPEN !

Come enjoy a slice of vintage pop culture at our historic cartoon landmark from the 1970’s.

Cool pic, BTW!

OMG how cute is this? I recognized Wilma but didn’t know there was a kitsch site to visit! Adding this to my fall itinerary (we’ll be out that way)!

Thank you, the ladies have 'tude! I’m glad it’s back open. It was a little depressing looking last time we drove past. It’s been around a long time!

I haven’t actually been in the place since I was little, but have driven by it many times. If you go you’d better take a pic with Wilma!

We are traveling in the fall also, prob CO though. I’ll have to wave at you across the 4 corners!

I love it that I found a pic with her wearing my buckle; I still have the belt too.

That’s a great picture for so many reasons! It looks right out of The Wonder Years. And I love it when people have photos of their jewelry being worn and enjoyed decades ago.

Oh gosh, I remember that place!! At a junction about 25 miles from Grand Canyon National Park. Have stayed there in the hotel across the street a couple times. Glad it is still open. The west has so many oddball places.

Great picture! We never left the Southeast growing up. I started traveling once I got married at age 25. I wanted to see some different places.

We almost always went north to Canada, but twice in my childhood we took a loooong driving trip West. This trip was 6 people (only one was a little kid - me) and a German Shepherd (!!!) in a big ole station wagon with a wooden cartop carrier. At one point dad attached a rack of antlers to the back of the car.

I didn’t get to the southeast till after I was about 30. I did love Charleston!

@mmrogers, you wanted to see sharper images of my buckle so here they are.

Thanks for posting Joe! I’m going to go with my previous assessment that this buckle was cast from a completely handmade master. The clearer images of the back reveal minor distortions and mold lines from a ‘flap’ cut to relieve the cross piece. Once again this is a really beautiful and unique piece, and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if this were the only surviving example.

Here’s my monster of a buckle, weighs 171 grams.
Signed P.N. (Not sure who that is) Zuni? Navajo?

Wow, that’s a beautiful buckle! 171 grams is impressive. I see your concho belt is being shy. :slightly_smiling_face:

I’m too shy to wear it, so it lurks in the background…

Very nice! I like the laced edge of the leather. Any info on it?

They are both amazing! I can’t bring myself to buy/wear a concho belt. Partly I think it would bug me vs a regular belt that goes through belt loops, but also I just can’t make myself plunk down the bucks for one.

Taking another look at your belt, I now see that the leather is rough out. That’s unusual. I like it!
