Claw belt buckle - need your quick help please

Hello guys,
have this in hands, they offer $1400 with negotiations to come, discounted from $3600. Location Scottsdale. Very close to perfectly what I want.

Anyone knowing if this is brown or black bear claw or even something else. Shop is closing in two hours.
Price fair in your eyes? Would you grab it? Why?
Any guess on the mine? King’s Manassa?
Thanks a lot!

Does it have a hallmark? And I know things are pricier in Scottsdale, but do they know anything about it? For that price it seems like they should have some info on it. I wouldn’t guess King’s Manassa, but :person_shrugging: Did they say that’s what it is?

What store is it?

Was sure you’re gonna ask

Southwest gallery close to Waddell.
They don’t know too much about it.

I just found similar buckles he made. They are listed on Etsy and online stores for $600-$1250.

I was just going to say the same thing. I’m thinking they never really were going to charge $3,600, that seems ridiculously high IMO. Some of the stuff online does appear to have bear claws. But I’m no expert on that.

Thanks a lot for your competent quick answers. So I hear rather a “no”

I don’t know…if you really love it and it’s exactly what you want. At least it’s a known artist. I’m not familiar with that shop so I don’t have any thoughts on them. I just prefer shops are more knowledgeable when they’re trying to charge that much.

Hallmark is for Mike Thomas, Jr. (Navajo). Creates buckles. Info from Hougart’s NA Silver Hallmarks book.

And here’s a link to a previous discussion on the forum about his work. Information on Michael (Mike) Thomas, Jr

Everything does cost more in Scottsdale LOL

That’s a black bear claw. It’s most likely genuine as they are very common. Brown (grizzly) claws are much larger and not nearly as common.

In my opinion even the discounted price is brutal.

Thanks, my friends. Found three other ones also by M. Thomas Jr., similarly priced, all with the same type of stone. None of them has more details at all.
So my summary: look further, not here because prices are too high. Dark green turquoise is best. Something like this.

Also I remember a rule someone here has. Buy only what you REALLY love, and use.

THANK YOU.

I like this one over the other. Great turquoise and not as busy. To each their own.

Best of luck in your search.

So which one do you prefer?

And again thank you to all here :+1:

This is from Grey Wolf Gallery. $2400. Wonderful.

In my next life, when I’m a rich kid …

Agreed. The belt buckle with the fabulous green turquoise is the best. This buckle looks better made overall and of higher quality, imo. That green turquoise is outstanding.

That’s my favorite rule! Although it has to go hand in hand with my budget unfortunately

Hang in there; you will find what you love, and bring it home with you! I know that cuz I just did it

I agree with you. The others look like they’re trying to do a little too much.

Even the one with all the blue turquoise looks like it tried to cram too much in there IMO.

I’m a bit lost with English grammar. This one ^ is the one that you all prefer, right? My favorite for sure.
