Hi, can anyone offer any info on this beautiful necklace?
What specifically are you looking for? Can you please tell us a bit about how you aquired it, and anything you know about it? Are there any markings on the back? I don’t see much, but maybe I’m missing them. I do see those little marks you took a closeup pic of, but I doubt that they are a hallmark.
You may know this, but it is a squash blossom necklace, and most likely Navajo made. Squashes aren’t really in my wheelhouse, others here are more knowledgeable in regards to them, but I have learned many were made in the 70’s - 80’s. I suspect these beads are machine made, but I may be wrong.
If you’re wanting a dollar value estimate, most of us on here aren’t comfortable with giving that since we aren’t appraisers.
Thank you so much for replying! I received this as a gift from a friend who is cleaning out all of her jewelry so that she doesn’t have to put it in her will! She inherited it from a friend who collected squash blossom necklaces in the 70s and 80s. My friend said she went to different powwows and markets. The “mark” on the back is all I can see. I don’t need a monetary value. I’m just feel so privileged to have something this gorgeous! I have other pieces of turquoise jewelry that I love but nothing this substantial.
That is a lovely gift from a wonderful friend, and I’m sure you will always cherish it.
If I had to make a guess I would think that the turquoise might be from the Kingman mine, but that is always just an educated guess without verification from the source. I can’t tell if it’s natural turquoise or stabilized, but either way it’s very pretty. Your friend’s time frame fits in with what I would have guessed for the age of the squash. I also suspect it’s sterling silver. But I am not an expert; just someone who has loved and collected Native American jewelry for decades.
Here’s a thread you might enjoy that will help you learn more about squash blossom necklaces. Can we share our squash blossoms?
Enjoy your beautiful gift!
